Edoardo Ettore Forti | Neo-Pompeian painter

Edoardo Ettore Forti (1850-1940) was an Italian painter, active late 19th century - early 20th century.
was an Italian painter, who was prolific in depicting realistic Neo-Pompeian scenes of Ancient Roman life and events. These subjects were popular in the late-Victorian period, as exemplified by the popularity of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
He concentrated on ancient Roman subjects, which were rarely based on actual historical events.

With fastidious detail, he focused on the architectural features of ancient sites. The figures in Forti's paintings took second place to his elaborate renderings of grandiose ancient Roman architecture, detailed mosaic floors and Roman frescoes.
By the late 1800s, such paintings of ancient Greece and Rome were very popular. Artists researched the elements of their settings and painted with careful photographic realism to present plausible representations of daily life in classical times. Many of these Genre scenes also have erotic undercurrents, with languidly beautiful young women in the company of older men.

Ettore Forti meticulously researched the classical objects and decorations in this historical genre painting, but he improbably combined a grand, luxurious setting with an intimate, domestic social gathering.
He copied the painted architecture, swags of fruit and leaves, hanging masks, and instruments from Roman frescoes and based the floor marble and mosaic patterns, window grill pattern, and the klismos chair type on Roman models. The statues copy examples in Roman public and private collections.
There is little definitive information available about Forti's biography. His paintings are signed with his name and Rome.
Different sources can not cite a place of birth or birth date, and do not agree about a birth date. Nothing is known of his training. Many sources claim he was active a few decades before and after 1900.

He exhibited in Berlin between 1893-1897. He exhibited at the Mostra della Romana Società degli Amatori e Cultori in 1905.
One favorite topic is an salesman displaying artwork, jewelry, or rugs to well-dressed female patrician women, often in elegant settings.
