Lorenzo Bartolini | Faith in God / Fiducia in Dio, 1835

Lorenzo Bartolini🎨's "Fiducia in Dio" is the artist's best-known work and, more generally, is emblematic of Italian sculpture🎨 in the generation after Canova🎨. The model recalls Canova🎨's Mary Magdalen, but the work is more indebted to the observation of nature than the influence of the antique. It typifies the move towards a softer Neo-classicism which made way for Romanticism in Italian sculpture🎨.

Ilia Efimovich Repin (Ukrainian-born Russian Realist painter, 1844-1930)| Portrait of Leo Tolstoy, 1887

Best known for his two classic novels, 'War and Peace' and 'Anna Karenina' Leo Tolstoy, in full Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy / Лев Никола́евич Толсто́й (1828-1910), was a Russian writer, a master of realistic fiction and one of the world’s greatest novelists.

"Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself".

"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way".

"If you look for perfection, you'll never be content".

Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825)

Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825)

The art of Jacques-Louis David embodies the style known as Neoclassicism, which flourished in France during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
David championed a style of rigorous contours, sculpted forms, and polished surfaces; history paintings, such as his Lictors Returning to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons (Musée du Louvre, Paris) of 1789, were intended as moral exemplars.
He painted in the service of royalty, radical revolutionaries, and an emperor; although his political allegiances shifted, he remained faithful to the tenets of Neoclassicism, which he transmitted to a generation of students, including Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, François Gérard, Baron Antoine Jean Gros and Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.

Venice

By the bridge I stood
recently in the brown night.
From the distance came the sound of song;

Di lontano giungeva un canto:
gocce d’oro affioravano

Benedetto Luti | Baroque painter

Benedetto Luti | Baroque painter

Benedetto Luti (17 November 1666 - 17 June 1724) was an Italian painter.
In 1691, he moved to Rome, where he was patronized by Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, an enthusiast of Luti's pastel portraiture.
Luti was one of the first artists to work in pastels as the final composition as opposed to initial studies for paintings or frescoes.
He also worked in oils and painted frescoes, including for the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano.

Luti was also a successful art dealer and ran a school of drawing; among his pupils were Giovanni Domenico Piastrini, Giovanni Paolo Panini, Claude Arnulphy, Jean-Baptiste van Loo, William Kent, Charles-André van Loo, Gaetano Sardi, Agostino Ratti, Pietro Bianchi and Placido Costanzi.

Knighting

In 1720, he was knighted in the Academy of St Luke of Rome and elected Principe.
The appointment was not without controversy, since some:

"could not find anything (of Luti's) worthy of memory for the benefit of the arts. Pascoli's of account Luti, found him a deep intellect, and even more knowledgeable of the works that he draws, although ... because he knew too much and was never satisfied, he oftentimes recycled thoughts and figures: he did not make friends with anyone, and for this reason, when was elected Prince of the Academy, there was not much applause".

The next year he dedicated himself to painting frescoes the cupola of the Church of Santi Luca e Martina in Rome. | © Wikipedia

| © Wikipedia

Broken Eggs attracted favorable comment when exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1757.
One critic noted that the young serving girl had a noble pose worthy of a history painter.
The canvas was painted in Rome, but the principal source may have been a seventeenth-century Dutch work by Frans van Mieris the Elder (1635-1681) - State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, which Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French painter, 1725-1805) would have known from an engraving.
