Antonio Duarte, 1942 | Figurative painter

Antonio Duarte was born in Portugal where he graduated from Escola Artes Plasticas of Coimbra and Escola De Belas Artes of Lisbon.
Since graduating he pursued a career as a professional artist in Europe, where his work was shown in many exhibitions in Spain, Portugal and Germany.
Today his paintings form part of private and public collections across Europe.

Cristina Troufa, 1974 | Surrealist / Symbolist painter

Cristina Troufa is a Portuguese based artist, working predominately in figurative painting. In recent works, she uses her own image in autobiographical paintings that explore her livings and spiritual beliefs. As a form of self-knowledge and self-questioning, her work explores, in a symbolic and surrealistic way, an inner world, which remains inaccessible to the voyeur, who can only guess what each painting represents.
Cristina Troufa holds a masters degree in Painting since 2012 and a degree in Painting since 1998 bout in FBAUP (University of Fine Arts of Porto).
She has exhibited trough Portugal, in solo and group exhibitions since 1995 and international exhibitions, Italy, Spain, France and Australia.

Mario Henrique, 1983 | Abstract expressionism painter

Mario Henrique is an artist based in Cascais, Portugal.
Graduated in Design from Lisbon’s University of Fine Arts, he started his career in online marketing and web development agencies. Later on, as a creative director, he recruited and led teams in Portugal, Spain and Brazil.
As partner and head of design in one of these projects, he would eventually be part of a successful exit via acquisition, and then shifted his focus to contemporary painting, which had always been a parallel interest.

A prolific portraitist, Mario is fascinated by the unpredictability of the human behaviour: the brief glances, the impermanence of facial expressions, the sudden movements.
This dynamic is also present in his Ballerinas Series, which lean toward the abstract expressionism.
Making use of uncommon and “rough” materials, like cardboards, reversed canvases and hardware tools, he paints abruptly and spontaneously.
His approach relies on drippings, splashes and paint throws, so that the physicality of the painting process is transparent in the final piece.

Listed in various private collections across Europe, America and Asia, he has exhibited in galleries both locally and abroad, and was awarded🎨 an Honorable Mention for his participation in the Brasília Biennial of Contemporary Arts 2016.
He was also featured in Saatchi Art’s Inside The Studio and is currently represented by the prestigious Bill Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, GA (USA).
Mario owns a studio/gallery at the Marina, in Cascais (Portugal), where some of his paintings are publicly exhibited.

Alonso Sánchez Coello (1531-1588) Renaissance painter

Sánchez Coello, Alonso (Benifairó del Valls, Valencia - Spain, 1531/32 - Madrid -Spain, 1588) is a fundamental figure in the history of Spanish painting🎨.
He was the first to bring portraiture to the peninsula, where he followed the model developed by Anthonis Mor in likenesses of the Habsburg family.
Some of his paintings were included in the most important portrait galleries developed during the reign of Philip II, including those at the El Pardo and Alcázar Palaces, both sadly lost to fires in 1604 and 1734, respectively.
Today, his works hang in the Museo del Prado, in Spain’s royal foundations, including the Monastery of the Descalzas Reales and in museums and collections in Austria and Bohemia.

At the age of ten, Alonso Sánchez Coello moved with his family to Portugal, where he began his first art studies.
John III, king of Portugal, was aware of his talent and in 1550 he paid the young artist’s trip to Flanders to complete his training.
There, Sánchez Coello worked for Cardinal Granvela and was a disciple of Anthonis Mor van Dashorst.
After returning to Lisbon around 1552, he probably began working for Prince John Emmanuel of Lisbon and his wife, donna Juana, whose brother was Philip II of Spain.
Following the prince’s death, Juana returned to Spain to rule the country in her brother’s absence.

Around 1555, Sánchez Coello traveled to the Spanish court, then in Valladolid, to deliver a portrait of her son, the future King Sebastian of Portugal.
Remaining in Valladolid, he painted the first portraits of Philip II’s heir, Prince Charles, and around 1560 he married Luisa Reynalte, from a family of silversmiths.
That same year, Philip II appointed him chamber painter, a post he held until his death in Madrid in 1588. He had moved to that city along with the court in 1561.

Miguel Freitas | City streets painter

Miguel Freitas grew up in Lisbon, Portugal, later he moved to Toronto where he continued to study the fine arts exploring ways of expressing his creativity.
His artistic diversity and ability to work with various media and styles has proven to be a great asset to his creative career. Starting out as a photographer, and then venturing into the design industry, his success as a designer and illustrator eventually led him to positions working as Art Director for companies both in Canada and Europe.
Although he enjoys design, he longed for new challenges and creative freedom and so he ventured on his own and now works from his home studio in the Toronto Beaches.
Miguel’s unique technique and style has attracted much attention and created a following where his originals have become sought after by collectors and galleries throughout North America.

António Macedo, 1955 | Magic Realism painter

António Pedro Urbano Veiga de Macedo is a Portuguese painter, born in Oporto, Portugal.
I attended the local art school, the "Escola Superior de Belas Artes" in 1973-74.
In 1975 I moved to London, where I continued to research into all kinds of painting techniques so as to develop my own style. Over the years, the close proximity to the great Art collections in the Capital, the study of so many great images, and contacts and friendships with artists in the U.K. and Portugal did much to help me learn what cannot be taught at Art School.

Ernesto Canto da Maia | Symbolist sculptor

Ernesto Canto da Maia (1890-1981) was born in 1890 at Ponta Delgada (São Miguel island, Azores) in the midst of a wealthy family. In 1907, after graduating at high school, he leaves to Lisbon and enrols at the Drawing Class of the Fine Arts School, having Ernesto Condeixa, José Luís Monteiro and José Alexandre Soares as teachers. In 1912, he participates at the I Portuguese Caricature Exhibit with a set of small statuetes which criticize the frivolity of life at the cities.

Maria Rita Pires, 1975 | Figurative and Paper sculptor

Maria Rita was born in Minde, Portugal, and felt her “fascination for clay” with only eleven years old. She began her studies in ceramics at ARCO - Center for Arts and Visual Communication (Centro de Artes e Comunicação Visual) in 1995, having concluded her degree in Ceramics and Art History in 1998.
She has developed her work in her own studio, and has participated in various interior design projects.
Her work is diversified using various materials, from porcelain to paper and cardboard, and includes the production of installations of mixed techniques.
