Agnès Boulloche | Fantastic Surrealism painter

Agnès Boulloche (1951-2019) was a prominent French Surrealist painter and sculptor renowned for creating fantastical, dreamlike universes.

Heavily inspired by her childhood in Morocco and the works of Old Masters like Hieronymus Bosch, her art blends human and animal forms into surreal, allegorical creatures.

Born in Paris, she was the daughter of André Boulloche, a prominent French resistance fighter and Minister of Education.

She spent her early childhood in Morocco.

This environment deeply instilled in her a lifelong fascination with local legends, genies (djinns), and the uncanny.

In the 1960s, she returned to Paris to study at the École des Arts Décoratifs.

She spent her final decades living and working between Paris and Loix, a village surrounded by salt marshes on the Île de Ré.

She passed away on April 7, 2019.

Fantastic Realism: Boulloche populated her panels with a whimsical "humanimal" population-chimeras, gorgons, riding pigs, and horned creatures dancing across stone-paved, chessboard gardens.

She worked primarily in oil on wood panels using a meticulous, ancient glazing method.

By superimposing multiple thin, transparent layers of paint, she achieved deep luminescence and intricate fine-stroke details.

True to an Old Master approach, she famously mixed her own custom mediums, varnishes, and pigments.

In addition to painting, she translated her eccentric figures into limited-edition bronze sculptures.
