Salvador Dali | The Surreal Watercolors

Salvador Dalí produced over 1,500 paintings in his career, in addition to producing illustrations for books, lithographs, designs for theater sets and costumes, a great number of drawings, dozens of sculptures, and various other projects, including an animated short film for Disney.

Dalí's most extensive watercolor legacies are his massive suites commissioned for classic masterpieces of literature.

Masterpieces of Literary Illustration

👉 Dante's The Divine Comedy Suite (1951-1960): Comprising 100 magnificent watercolors charting the journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise.

Originally commissioned by the Italian government, the project sparked a political uproar over hiring a Spanish artist to honor Dante, prompting Dalí to finish the series independently.

The paintings were later translated into over 3,500 meticulous woodcuts.

👉 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1969): A spectacular series of 12 vibrant illustrations blending gouache, ink, and watercolor.

He captured Lewis Carroll's nonsensical world perfectly, deploying his iconic skipping-girl silhouette as Alice.

👉 Don Quixote de la Mancha (1946/1965): Dalí contributed multiple watercolor studies for the classic Spanish novel, notably subverting the windmill battle into a dreamlike hallucination originating directly from Quixote's head.

Opera, Theater and Stage Design

In the 1950s and 60s, Dalí brought his signature surrealist vision to the stage through theatrical concept watercolors.

👉 The Spanish Lady and the Roman Cavalier Set Designs (1960-1961): Commissioned by Metropolitan Opera bass Lorenzo Alvary, Dalí produced a series of rare watercolors to serve as backdrops for this Baroque opera.

Works like Apotheosis and The Elephants integrated his timeless motifs—including melting clocks and spindly-legged pachyderms-into fluid watercolor backdrops.

As Dalí moved into his "Nuclear Mysticism" era, he relied on watercolor to merge science, religion, and perspective.

👉 Cosmic Contemplation (1951): A grand, dramatic watercolor held by the Salvador Dalí Museum that explores sacred geometry, Catholicism and atomic physics, framing angels and saints inside a giant dodecahedron cloud.

👉 The Fruit Surrealism Series (1969-1970): A series of 14 highly unique botanical watercolors where Dalí took precise 19th-century stipple engravings of fruits and painted surreal morphing mutations over them, adding crutches, eyeballs, and unexpected animal legs.
