Pierre-Auguste Renoir loved women. Most of his subjects were female, often women who were relatives, friends and lovers. Even his son was frequently dressed up as a little girl, appearing in a lovable and innocent manner in his paintings.
In his later years, female nudes became an important theme for Renoir who commented, "I never think I have finished a nude until I think I could pinch it". We shall briefly introduce a few of the ladies who often appeared in Renoir's paintings and describe their relationships with the artist. This will give us a better understanding of the artist's state of mind as we admire his figurative works.
