Louis Gallait | Romantic painter

Louis Gallait (1810-1887) was a Belgian painter.

He lay at the basis of a revival of history painting in Belgium.

He earned his reputation especially with the large painting of Charles V's abdication.

Gallait's works were esteemed because of their realism, faithfulness of the costumes and color composition of his paintings.

He was also a distinguished portrait painter.

Giuseppe De Nittis | Impressionist painter

Giuseppe De Nittis (1846-1884) - printmaker, painter and draughtsman.

Born in Barletta in Apulia, De Nittis received his first artistic training from Giambattista Calò, a local painter, before moving to Naples in 1861 to attend the Istituto di Belle Arti.

He was expelled in 1863 for failing to conform to academic practice.
