Motherhood by Pablo Picasso

The subject of mother and child runs through the various stages of Picasso’s artistic production, although it appears more frequently in his early works.
Picasso's Maternities belong to the artist's neoclassical period, during which he developed a style reminiscent of classicism and used mythological images such as centaurs, minotaurs, nymphs, and fauns.
He created at least a dozen pictures inspired by and dedicated to motherhood and the special relationship between mother and child.

The women in these paintings resemble antique statues suddenly given life.
They are solid and powerful, like ancient goddesses, and are painted in quiet tones of gray and rose.
They are all Great Mothers, connected to the earth.

Though some of Picasso's neoclassical mother-and-child canvases are not large in themselves, the effect of any one of them seems larger than life.
Their interaction is both animated and tranquil, evoking a tender lyricism and the calming spirit of motherhood.
Picasso's neoclassical period lasted until about 1925, when his art moved in still another direction.



















Il tema della madre e del bambino attraversa le varie fasi della produzione artistica di Picasso, anche se appare con maggiore frequenza nelle sue prime opere.
Le Maternità di Picasso appartengono al periodo neoclassico dell'artista, durante il quale sviluppò uno stile che ricorda il classicismo, con l'utilizzò di figure mitologiche come centauri, minotauri, ninfe e fauni.


Ha realizzato almeno una dozzina di tele ispirate e dedicate alla maternità ed al rapporto speciale tra madre e figlio.
Le donne in questi dipinti assomigliano a statue antiche che improvvisamente prendono vita.
Sono solidi e potenti, come le antiche dee, e sono dipinti in toni tranquilli di grigio e rosa.


Sono tutte Grandi Madri, collegate alla terra.
Sebbene alcune delle tele neoclassiche di Picasso con madre e figlio non siano grandi di per sé, l'effetto di ognuna di esse sembra più grande della vita.
La loro interazione è animata e tranquilla, evocando un tenero lirismo e lo spirito calmante della maternità.
Il periodo neoclassico di Picasso durò fino al 1925 circa, quando la sua arte si mosse in un'altra direzione.
