Maki Horanai, 1977 | Magic realism painter

Born in Japan, Maki Horanai 洞内麻希 moved to Australia from Japan in 2005 and has had 18 solo exhibitions in various cities throughout Australia.
She grew up in small seaside villages in Hokkaido, northern Japan, where she often sat or played along the beach.
Maki's early influences were the ocean, the shore, the birds and islands she saw both in reality and in her imagination.

Fantastic Art

Fantastic Art is a broad and loosely defined art genre.
It is not restricted to a specific school of artists, geographical location or historical period.
It can be characterised by subject matter - which portrays non-realistic, mystical, mythical or folkloric subjects or events - and style, which is representational and naturalistic, rather than abstract - or in the case of magazine illustrations and similar, in the style of graphic novel art such as manga.

Louise Camille Fenne, 1972 | Magic realism painter

Louise Camille Fenne was born in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Having a Danish father and an English mother, she grew up and went to school in both Denmark and England.
Louise studied drawing in Aix-en Provence, France and at The Glyptotek, Copenhagen, before enrolling at The Florence Academy of Art in 1995, being intrigued by the possibility of studying traditional painting and drawing techniques.

Rosario de Velasco | Magic Realism painter

Rosario de Velasco Belausteguigoitia (Madrid, 1904 - Barcelona, 1991) Spanish painter.
Born in Madrid, in her early years she started an active painting career.
Pupil of Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor y Zaragoza, developed a neo-traditional style imbued with Magic Realism.
Her favourite subjects were seascapes, portraits and landscapes.

Louis Guglielmi | Magic Realist painter

Osvaldo Louis Guglielmi (1906-1956) was an American painter.
He was well known in New York, but soon forgotten after his death, as abstract expressionism came to overshadow artists like him.
There are elements of precisionism, surrealism, geometric abstraction, regionalism and social realism in his work.
His paintings often commented on poverty and other social and political themes; bleakness and death appear regularly in his pre-war works. With Walter Quirt and James Guy, he was a prominent exponent of "social surrealism".


After the war, his painting became more planar and abstract, with elements of cubism, and he disavowed the personal sadness in his earlier works in favor of expressing the "exuberance and organic means of life itself".
The New York Times also attributed his decline to his being "a relentless borrower, an irrepressible eclectic who seemed to prey voraciously on the styles of others".
Born in Cairo, Egypt, as a child he lived in Milan and Geneva while his Italian father, a professional violinist, toured the world.
In 1914 his parents brought him to the United States, where they lived in Italian Harlem, New York.


He was interested in sculpture at a young age and worked at a casting factory.
He attended the National Academy of Design in the evening beginning in 1920, while also attending high school, and attended full-time from 1923 to 1926.
The next year he became a naturalized citizen.

The Great Depression brought financial hardship, but the difficult times inspired his artwork.
From 1935 to 1939, he worked with the Federal Art Project, which supported artists during the Depression.


In the 1930s he spent many summers at the MacDowell Colony for artists in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
Guglielmi had his first one-man show in 1938, exhibiting his new work Mental Geography.
Inspired by the Spanish Civil War-depicting a bombed-out Brooklyn Bridge -it was a warning that European fascism might spread.

Guglielmi was part of the 1943 "American Realists and Magic Realists" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art.
He was with the Army Corps of Engineers in the war between 1943 and 1945, and did not paint.


In the 1950s, he held positions at Louisiana State University, first as a visiting artist and then as an associate professor.
He died in 1956 of a heart attack in Amagansett, New York.

Era molto conosciuto a New York, ma presto dimenticato dopo la sua morte, poiché l'espressionismo astratto arrivò a mettere in ombra artisti come lui.
Ci sono elementi di precisione, surrealismo, astrazione geometrica, regionalismo e realismo sociale nel suo lavoro.

Aga Osak | Magic realism painter

Polish painter and illustrator Aga Osak graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Rzeszów.
Diploma in sculpture in the studio prof. Maria Górecka in 2009.
Graduated Active Art School of Theater Technique in Warsaw in 2011.
After graduation she was involved in theatrical scenery and theater costumes.



She also dealt with photography and stage design for photo shoots.
Currently she is focusing on painting.
Today she creates and paint magical stories from fantasy land based on Surrealism and Magic Realism.

She combines various painting techniques and styles and is looking for new means of expression.
Her painting is characterized by dynamics, expression, richness of color, details and symbols, with a mix of 3D elements and theater climate.













Aga Osak si è laureata all'Istituto di Belle Arti dell'Università di Rzeszów.
Diploma di scultura presso lo studio prof. Maria Gorecka nel 2009.
Diplomata alla Scuola d'Arte Attiva di Tecnica Teatrale di Varsavia nel 2011.
Dopo il diploma si è occupata di scenografie teatrali e costumi teatrali.


Si è occupata anche di fotografia e scenografia per set fotografici.
Attualmente si sta concentrando sulla pittura.
Oggi crea e dipinge storie magiche dal mondo fantastico basate sul surrealismo e sul realismo magico.
Combina varie tecniche e stili pittorici ed è alla ricerca di nuovi mezzi espressivi.
La sua pittura è caratterizzata da dinamica, espressione, ricchezza di colore, dettagli e simboli, con un mix di elementi 3D e clima teatrale.

Ilya Zomb, 1960 | Magical realism painter

New York based Russian-born painter Ilya Zomb studied at the Odessa State Art College and the Odessa Art School between 1971 and 1979, majoring in fine arts.
In his paintings, images of ballerinas, elephants, and gigantic fruits appear as if out of a dream, but the artist says it's the everyday life in New York,where he lives, that inspires his flights of fancy.

Rein Pol, 1949 | Magic Realism

Rein Pol is a Dutch artist.
Appearances can be deceptive. Everyone knows that. Sometimes though, appearance and reality are so insidiously close together that they can hardly be separated.
The painter Rein Pol addresses this whimsical phenomenon of deceptive reality in paintings showing a peculiar mixture of facts and fiction.

Born in Florence, Monica Cattaneo - artist of Italian origin but naturalised Swiss citizen, seems to achieve in her painting a perfect fusion of the three pictorial styles, Marc Chagall’s Expressionism, René Magritte’s Surrealism and Antonio Donghi’s Magical Realism, giving life to a personal and original language in which nature and the human being’s relationship with it become the focal point.

María Berrío, 1982 | Magic Realism painter

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Brooklyn-based Maria Berrio is a contemporary artist primarily known for her prismatic, large-scale paper collages.
The artist completed her BFA at the Parsons School of Design in 2004, after which she received her MFA at the New York School of Visual Arts in 2007.
Berrio’s work sees her filter memories of her childhood spent on a farm in Colombia, and her subsequent experience with migration, through the lens of her studio practice.

Edita Broglio (1886-1977) was a Latvian artist known for her paintings in the genre of Magic Realism.
She was born Edita Walterowna von Zur Muehlen in the town of Smiltene, northeast of Riga.
From 1908 to 1910 she studied at the Konigsberg Art Academy in East Prussia and in Paris since 1910.
In 1912 she settled permanently in Rome, coming into contact with Olga Resnevic Signorelli who introduced her to her living room, frequented by Melli, Spadini, Ferrazzi, Ivan Mestrovic.

Antonio Donghi (March 16, 1897 - July 16, 1963) was an Italian painter of scenes of popular life, landscapes, and still life.
Born in Rome, he studied painting at the Instituto di Belle Arti from 1908 to 1916.
After military service in World War I he studied art in Florence and Venice, soon establishing himself as one of Italy's leading figures in the neoclassical movement that arose in the 1920s.
Possessed of an extremely refined technique, Donghi favored strong composition, spatial clarity, and populist subject matter.

Italian painter Ugo Celada da Virgilio (1895-1995) represented a real point of conjunction between Metaphysics, Magic Realism, New Objectivity and Novecento.
Ugo Celada was born in Mantua, in Cerese.
As a child he drew so well that he managed to convince his father to enrol him, at the age of only twelve, at the Royal School of Applied Art in Mantua, from which he passed, thanks to a scholarship, to the Brera Academy, where he particularly appreciated the lessons of the painter Cesare Tallone, the author of portraits painted with refined brushwork and of a remarkable expressiveness.

Albert Birkle (1900-1986) was a German painter and draftsman.
Albert Birkle was born in Charlottenburg, then an independent city and since 1920 part of Berlin.
His grandfather on his mother's side, Gustav Bregenzer, and his father, Carl Birkle, both were painters, originally from Swabia.
Albert Birkle was trained as a decorative painter in his father's firm.

Robert Lyn Nelson, 1955 | Magic realism painter

Robert Lyn Nelson is an American artist known for his paintings of marine wildlife, particularly those in his "Two Worlds" style, which simultaneously shows life above and below the surface of the sea.

Artistic career

Nelson moved to Hawaii when he was eighteen years old.
According to Nelson, the turning point in his life and his career occurred when he encountered a group of whales while surfing off Lahaina, Hawaii.

"In learning to ride the waves, I also learned to respect the ocean...to feel its pulse with all five of my senses, and to feel its spirit at an extra-sensory level. It was a blend of magic and realism that I wanted to communicate in my paintings", says Nelson.
