Major Historical Periods

Italian art is defined by distinct eras that shifted how humanity and the divine were perceived:

Ancient and Roman: Focused on grand imperial monuments, realistic portraiture, and intricate mosaics as seen in Pompeii.
Medieval (c. 300–1400): Dominated by religious symbolism and the Italo-Byzantine style, characterized by gold-ground panels and formalized icons.

The Renaissance (c. 1300–1600): A "rebirth" of classical ideals where artists like Giotto introduced naturalism and perspective.
The High Renaissance peaked with the "titans": Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael.

Baroque (c. 1600–1750): Known for movement, intense emotion, and the dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) pioneered by Caravaggio and sculptor Bernini.
Modern Movements: 20th-century styles like Futurism (celebrating speed and technology) and Arte Povera (using humble, everyday materials) continued to challenge artistic conventions.
