Paul Cézanne | The Four Seasons, 1860

between 1860 and 1862, French painter Paul Cézanne, still a student at the law faculty in Aix, started out as a painter by decorating the walls of the main drawing room at Jas de Bouffan, based on the allegorical theme of The Four Seasons (Les Quatre Saisons).

He was twenty when his father bought this estate near Aix-en-Provence.

Mio caro Bernard,

ho ricevuto la vostra del... che ho lasciato in campagna. Se ho tardato a rispondervi, è perché sono soggetto a disturbi cerebrali, che mi impediscono di agire liberamente. Resto sotto l'urto delle sensazioni e, malgrado l'età, inchiodato alla pittura.

Il tempo è bello, ne approfitto per lavorare; bisognerebbe fare dieci buoni studi, e venderli cari, visto che gli amatori ci speculano sopra.

Ieri è arrivata qui una lettera indirizzata a mio figlio, che la signora Brémond [la governante di Cézanne] ritiene sia vostra; gliel'ho inviata in rue Duperré 16, Parigi, IX distretto. Sembra che Vollard abbia dato qualche giorno fa una serata danzante, in cui si è molto gozzovigliato. C'era tutta la giovane scuola, sembra, Maurice Denis, Vuillard eccetera. Si sono incontrati Paul e Joachim Gasquet. Credo che la cosa migliore sia lavorare molto. Voi siete giovane, realizzate e vendete.

"quando riceverete questa mia, avrete molto probabilmente già ricevuto una lettera dal Belgio, o almeno lo spero, indirizzata in rue Boulegon. Sono felice della testimonianza di simpatia artistica che avete voluto gentilmente offrirmi con la vostra lettera.

Permettetemi di ripetere quello che vi dicevo qui: trattare la natura secondo il cilindro, la sfera, il cono, il tutto posto in prospettiva, in modo che ogni lato di un oggetto o di un piano si diriga verso un punto centrale.

Paul Cézanne | Giocatori di carte, 1890-92

Tra il 1890-1896, Cézanne intraprese un ambizioso progetto di pittura dedicato al tema dei giocatori di carte. Arruolò dei contadini delle terre di famiglia, vicino ad Aix-en-Provence, come modelli.

Basandosi su numerosi studi preparatori, l’artista realizzò cinque composizioni che ampliano, sfidandole, le raffigurazioni tradizionali di questo tema, popolare fin dal Seicento. Pare che questa tela sia stata la prima della serie.

Dopo aver dipinto una successiva versione di grandezza doppia rispetto alla prima che comprendeva una nuova figura, un bambino in piedi, nelle tre versioni seguenti Cézanne eliminò i particolari superflui, raffigurando soltanto due giocatori, che si affrontano a viso duro attraverso il tavolo. | © The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The works of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), to whom this hall - 410, is devoted, present the oeuvre of one of the chief figures in Post-Impressionism, from paintings of 1879-80 to works from the final years of his life.

Canvases of various genres were executed in the artist's mature manner.

Painted during Cézanne's final period in the early 1890s, there are five paintings in the series.

The versions vary in size, the number of players, and the setting in which the game takes place.

Cézanne's🎨 works were rejected numerous times by the official Salon in Paris and ridiculed by art critics when exhibited with the Impressionists.

Yet during his lifetime Cézanne was considered a master by younger artists who visited his studio in Aix.

Along with the work of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, the work of Cézanne, with its sense of immediacy and incompletion, critically influenced Matisse and others prior to Fauvism and Expressionism.

After Cézanne died in 1906, his paintings were exhibited in a large museum-like retrospective in Paris, September 1907.

The 1907 Cézanne retrospective at the Salon d'Automne greatly affected the direction that the avant-garde in Paris took, lending credence to his position as one of the most influential artists of the 19th century and to the advent of Cubism.

Cézanne's explorations of geometric simplification and optical phenomena inspired Picasso, Braque, Metzinger, Gleizes, Gris and others to experiment with ever more complex views of the same subject and eventually to the fracturing of form.

Cézanne thus sparked one of the most revolutionary areas of artistic enquiry of the 20th century, one which was to affect profoundly the development of modern art.

• Picasso referred to Cézanne as "the father of us all" and claimed him as "my one and only master!"

Other painters such as Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Kasimir Malevich, Georges Rouault, Paul Klee, and Henri Matisse acknowledged Cézanne's genius.

Durante il 2012, Paul Cézanne 1839-1906, pittore post-impressionista francese, con il quadro "I giocatori di carte" 1890-1895, olio su tela, cm 47,5x57, è stato giudicato il pittore più pagato del mondo.
A febbraio, il quadro "I giocatori di carte" all'olio del pittore post impressionista, è stato comprato all'asta dalla famiglia reale del Qatar, mentre, il maggio scorso, un acquerello su carta, eseguito da Cézanne tra il 1892-1896 per lo studio preparatorio di 46 centimetri per 30 per il celebre capolavoro, è stato battuto all’asta da Christie’s a New York per 19,12 milioni di dollari - 14 milioni di euro.
