Vilhelm Hammershøi | Interior painter

Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) was a Danish painter. He is known for his poetic, subdued portraits and interiors.

In 1997, Denmark issued a postage stamp in his honour.

Vilhelm Hammershøi was born iin Copenhagen, Denmark.

The son of a well-to-do merchant, Christian Hammershøi, and his wife, Frederikke (née Rentzmann), Hammershøi studied drawing from the age of eight with Niels Christian Kierkegaard and Holger Grønvold, as well as painting with Vilhelm Kyhn, before embarking on studies with Frederik Vermehren and others at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

She was a Danish painter and sculptor who was influenced by Italian art before the Renaissance, British Pre-Raphaelites and the Arts and Crafts Movement in his image and style.

Lili Elbe (born December 28, 1882, Vejle, Denmark - died September 13, 1931, Dresden, Germany) was a Danish painter who was assigned male at birth, experienced what is now called gender dysphoria, and underwent the world’s first documented sex reassignment surgery.

Born Einar Wegener, Elbe lived nearly her whole life as a man.

Peder Mørk Mønsted (1859-1941)

Danish painter Peder Mørk Mønsted was born in Balle Mölle, near Grenna in eastern Denmark on 10th December 1859.

He studied at the Prince Ferdinand’s Drawing School, Aarhus where he studied under Andries Fritz (1828-1906), a landscape and portrait painter, before moving to Copenhagen.

Here he studied at the Royal Academy of Art between 1875-1878, and was taught figure painting by Julius Exner (1825-1910).

The work was made towards the end of Pissarro's career, when he abandoned his experiments with Pointillism and returned to a looser Impressionist style.

It is part of a series of works that Pissarro made in 1897-98 from a window of the Grand Hôtel du Louvre, looking down across the edge of the Place du Théâtre Français (now the Place André-Malraux) and along the rue Saint-Honoré, portraying the people, carriages and buildings, the trees, fountains and streetlamps, in an early afternoon shower of rain.
