Leo Putz (18 June 1869, in Merano - 21 July 1940, in Merano) was a Tyrolean painter. His work encompasses Art Nouveau, Impressionism* and the beginnings of Expressionism. Figures and landscapes are his predominant subjects.
Leo Putz was born in Merano in South Tyrol, Italy, in 1869. His artistic career began in 1885 under the aegis of his stepbrother. This was Robert Poetzelberger (1856-1930) who was a professor at the Munich Academy and who taught him drawing.

After this early training he spent two years in Paris (1891-1892) attending classes at a private art school - the Académie Julian. In 1893 he was back in Munich studying under Paul Hoecker (1854-1910) at the Munich Academy. In 1901 he joined the Scholle group of artists, a group founded in 1899. His work brought him significant recognition and he was appointed a professor in 1909.
He spent the summers of 1914-15 at Schloss Hartmannsberg near the Chiemsee, the largest lake in Bavaria. Here he was to produce some of his finest plein-air paintings - free, light-filled images of female figures - the models bathing, boating and reclining at the lakeside. In 1923 he moved with his family to Gauting near Munich.
From 1928-1933 he lived in Brazil, first in Sao Paulo and later in Rio de Janeiro where he taught at the School of Fine Arts. He returned to Munich in 1933. Forbidden to exhibit, he returned to his home town Merano in 1936 where he died on 21 July 1940.
