Montserrat Gudiol | Symbolist / Figurative painter

Montserrat Gudiol (1933-2015) was an Spanish painter, daughter of the art historian and architect José Gudiol Ricart, curator and promoter of the Episcopal Museum of Vic.
On the mother's side, she is related to Teresa Ametller, sponsor of the Institut Ametller d'Art Hispànic, who founded and directed the father, José Gudiol.
In 1950, she studied restoration of old paintings and focuses specifically on painting on wood and paper.

It sets out in Spain but also in South Africa, the United States, Russia and Canada.

In 1981 she became the first woman admitted to the Real Academia Catalana of Fine Arts of San Jordi.
In 1998 she received the Cross of St. George.



The starting point for Montserrat Gudiol’s work is founded on the broad tradition of figurative art filtered through Symbolism and a stylisation that values the detail at the core of the painting.
Through the concentric blurring of the surroundings, Gudiol explores the plasticity of the expression of the faces and the spirituality that issues as much from the private and calm halo of the subjects as from the atmosphere that generates it.
The tone of the painting is arrived at by means of a small range of colours - blacks and ochres - on the surface. Small reddish areas fill the wall and give it a sense of substance and volume.
The sensibility of the figures portrayed emanates from their handsome, Gothic and timeless faces, and the painted women become ethereal and symbolic.


The models, who are always women and created with the contrasts inherent in human existence, strive to convey the sensitive and reflective soul that they are endowed with thanks to Gudiol’s skill.
Gudiol makes the contrasting colour predominate over the drawing, in which she singles out the face rather than the body, which is merged into the backdrop done in identical colours.
The structure of Figure is asymmetric.
The two sole points of light - the window and the face of the only figure in the painting - are to the spectator’s right.
The tension created by this layout allows the artist to deploy an entire range of chromatic devices based on chiaroscuro.
The woman’s body is shown at rest and is lightly outlined in such a way that it merges with the background, highlighting the face, the mirror of the soul.
The paradox heightens the mystical component of the work: the light is generated and enters via the back, at the rear guard of the archetype, and also emphasises the lighting value of the face, the gold of the image that blends with the darkness, in the calm.
The human figure as the theme from every angle, with all the expressions that shape it.


























Montserrat Gudiol Corominas (Barcellona, 9 giugno 1933 - ivi, 25 dicembre 2015) è stata una pittrice Spagnola, figlia dello storico dell'arte ed architetto José Gudiol Ricart, curatore e promotore del Museo episcopale di Vic.
Dalla parte materna, è imparentata con Teresa Ametller, sponsor dell'Institut Ametller d'Art Hispànic, che ha fondato e diretto il padre, José Gudiol.
Montserrat Gudiol ha imparato da suo padre, uno dei maestri catalani più eminenti nello studio dell'arte ed è cresciuta in una famiglia dove l'arte e la musica erano un elemento vitale.
Ha lottato sin dal suo inizio per trovare un linguaggio pittorico personale e più sincero, evitando volontariamente qualsiasi stile o moda, perché sa che in arte, come in ogni altra cosa, non c'è via di mezzo.
I dipinti e disegni di Montserrat rivelano anche la forte personalità di una donna, la sua capacità di lavorare e lottare, la sua infinita tenerezza di madre, ma anche i problemi estremi degli esseri umani.
Sullo sfondo delle sue creazioni appare sempre un profondo, misterioso, eppure inquietante, silenzio, un affetto emotivo e anche una certa ansia, la pace indicibile e l'angoscia totalmente umana. Influenzata dai temi del surrealismo e dalle forme di Pablo Picasso, delle sue epoche blu e rosa.

Ha lavorato nel Museo Nazionale dell'Arte della Catalogna (MNAC), a Madrid, Bilbao, Johannesburg, Flint, Montreal, ecc.
Nel 1981 è stata la prima donna ad entrare nella Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts di San Jorge.
Nel 1998 ha ricevuto il Premio Creu de Sant Jordi assegnato dal governo della Catalogna.
Ha esposto a Barcellona, Ripoll, Málaga, Siviglia, Bilbao, Sud Africa, Stati Uniti, l'ex Unione Sovietica ed in Canada.


Premi e riconoscimenti
  • 1954 - 1° premio assegnato dalla Diputación de Barcelona alla mostra collettiva "Pintura Femenina", nello stesso anno ottiene il 2° premio nel concorso organizzato dal Consiglio Provinciale di Barcellona: il Premio Sant Jordi.
  • 1960 - 3° premio all'Esposizione Nazionale delle Belle Arti, Barcellona e 1° premio al Concorso Internazionale di Disegno della Fondazione Ynglada Guillot, Barcellona.
  • 1981 - Viene eletta membro a pieno titolo dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di San Jorge, Barcellona.
  • Membro del Royal Artistic Circle di Barcellona.
  • Medaglia d'oro dell'Ordine degli avvocati, Barcellona.
  • 2004 - Senatore del Forum universale delle culture, Barcellona.
  • Membro della Fondazione Jaume I.
  • Membro del Consiglio consultivo della Fondazione internazionale per le donne imprenditrici (FIDEM).
