Franz Marc: "Art is nothing but the expression of our dream"!

👉 "Blue is the male principle, stern and spiritual. Yellow the female principle, gentle, cheerful and sensual. Red is matter, brutal and heavy and always the colour which must be fought and vanquished by the other two".

👉 "Serious art has been the work of individual artists whose art has had nothing to do with style because they were not in the least connected with the style or the needs of the masses. Their work arose rather in defiance of their times".

👉 "What appears spectral today will be natural tomorrow".
👉 "Ciò che oggi appare spettrale, domani sarà naturale".

👉 "Art is nothing but the expression of our dream; the more we surrender to it the closer we get to the inner truth of things, our dream-life, the true life that scorns questions and does not see them".

👉 "Like everything genuine, its inner life guarantees its truth. All works of art created by truthful minds without regard for the work's conventional exterior remain genuine for all times".

👉 "Art has always been and is in its very essence the boldest departure from nature. It is the bridge into the spirit world".

👉 "Today we are searching for things in nature that are hidden behind the veil of appearance... We look for and paint this inner, spiritual side of nature".

Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a seminal German painter and printmaker who stood as a central figure of German Expressionism.
Alongside Wassily Kandinsky, he co-founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an influential journal and circle of artists dedicated to channeling spiritual truths through vibrant, non-naturalistic color and form.
Driven by a pantheistic worldview, Marc believed humanity had lost its soul to industrialization and looked to the animal kingdom to find an uncorrupted, "virginal sense of life".
His brilliant career was cut tragically short when he was killed at the age of 36 during the Battle of Verdun in World War I.

Marc developed a strict, deeply felt symbolic color language to project the internal emotions and spirituality of his subjects:
👉 Blue: Represented masculinity, austerity, and spiritual depth.
👉 Yellow: Symbolized femininity, gentle joy, and sensual grace.
👉 Red: Evoked matter - brutal, heavy, and something always to be combated or overcome by the other colors.

His mature technique melded these vivid palettes with the angular, geometric lines of Cubism and Futurism, attempting to paint not just the animal itself, but the world as seen from the animal's own pure perspective.

Though the Nazi regime later condemned his progressive modernism as "degenerate", his surviving works were preserved and are today celebrated worldwide.
Original masterpieces command immense historical gravity at modern auctions; for instance, his painting Weidende Pferde III set a benchmark by drawing over £12 million.
His radical quest to "animalize art" continues to serve as a foundational pillar for twentieth-century abstraction.
