Norma Mascellani (1909-2009) was a celebrated Italian painter whose career spanned a full century of artistic and social change in her native city of Bologna.
A student of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, she was mentored by prominent figures such as Giorgio Morandi, Alfredo Protti and Giovanni Romagnoli.
Mascellani is best known for her intimate and poetic approach to light and atmosphere.
Her work evolved through various phases:
Landscape and Architecture: Her early 1930s works focused on local landscapes, later expanding to iconic series depicting Venice and the Basilica della Madonna di San Luca.
Portraiture and Social Themes: She often painted the humble and marginalized, including portraits of the elderly and disabled.
Signature Aesthetics: Her style is characterized by a "vibrant vitality", utilizing soft light to capture both domestic interiors and vast outdoor vistas.
Career Milestones
1937: Became the first female painter in Bologna to hold a solo exhibition at the Circolo della Stampa.
Exhibitions: Over the course of her life, she held more than 200 exhibitions across Italy and abroad.
Lercaro Donation: Between 1996 and 1999, she donated over 120 oil paintings and numerous graphic works to the Fondazione Lercaro in Bologna.
Centennial Legacy: On her 100th birthday in 2009, she was honored with major retrospective exhibitions; she passed away just months after this milestone.
Recent interest in her legacy has been revitalized by retrospectives such as Segreti dal Novecento (Secrets from the 20th Century), hosted at Palazzo d'Accursio.
Norma Mascellani (1909-2009), allieva di Giorgio Morandi, Alfredo Protti, Guglielmo Pizzirani e Giovanni Romagnoli, è stata una pittrice figurativa -ritratti, nature morte, paesaggi- con qualche risvolto metafisico.
Ha partecipato alla Biennale di Venezia XXII, 1939; XXV, 1950 ed alla Quadriennale di Roma III, 1939; VI, 1951; VII, 1955, e varie personali in Italia o nel 2005 al Parlamento Europeo di Bruxelles.
Ha ottenuto diversi riconoscimenti, sia artistici che per meriti sociali (ha fatto numerose opere di beneficenza), fra cui la "Stella d'oro della bontà" conferitale dal cardinale Giacomo Lercaro nel 1962, il titolo di Cavaliere ricevuto dal Presidente della Repubblica Italiana Giuseppe Saragat 1967 ed altri.
È morta, centenaria, il 7 dicembre 2009, dopo una breve malattia.
