Jungho Lee | Surrealist Illustrator


The Korean artist Jungho Lee is based in Seoul where he creates surreal illustrations for books and is also in the process of working on his own picture book.
Many of his recent pieces incorporate actual books as a wide variety of visual metaphors from the wings of a plane to pools of stars.
Jungho Lee was recently named the overall professional winner of the "World Illustration Awards 2016".


Jungho Lee studied graphic design at Hongik University in Seoul.

" First, I usually draw a basic idea of an image which was tried with a rough sketch and I start to draw a detail of image from one of the best rough sketch on a big paper".
"I usually describe with graphite or charcoal on the separated paper which based on the rough sketch. It is a step to gain many layers for the final completed image by scanneing them through the computer".
"Each of these elements can be coloured digitally but sometimes this process changed with different ways like a hand-drawing painting".

Originario della Corea del Sud e vincitore del World Illustration Awards, l'artista Jungho Lee, vive a Seoul e lavora come illustratore dal 2007.
Dotato di una tecnica straordinaria, Lee realizza incantevoli scene illustrate facendo uso di grafite e carbone sovrapposti a texture digitali, prediligendo tonalità tenui. Immagini surreali e minimal, esprimono delicatezza e fantasia, toccando l’anima con ricordi legati all’infanzia.
Il tema di fondo è il libro, in tutta la sua essenza.
Metafore concettuali e scenari surreali esaltano il potere della lettura e del senso personale ed intimo che ne scaturisce.
Grazie alla sua serie di illustrazioni che si ispirano al surrealismo di René Magritte e all'artista tedesco Quint Buchholz ha recentemente vinto il "World Illustration Awards 2016" nella categoria “overall professional winner”.
