Donato Creti | Astronomical Observations, 1711

Donato Creti (24 February 1671 - 31 January 1749) was an Italian painter🎨 of the Rococo period, active mostly in Bologna.

The series of Astronomical observations was commissioned in 1711 by the Bolognese count Luigi Marsili.

He had the artist Donato Creti paint all the planets in as many small pictures and made a gift of these to the Pope to convince him of the importance for the Holy Church of an astronomical observatory.

The gift made it possible to achieve his goal, because with the support of Clement XI (pontiff from 1700-1721) the first public astronomical observatory was opened in Bologna a short time later.

The eight small canvases show the planetary system as it was then known: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and a Comet.

The planet Uranus, only discovered in 1781, is missing.

The presence of the planets is dominant in the composition.

They are depicted as observed with telescopes and various optical instruments (for which the artist had precise instructions) by small human figures in eighteenth century clothes, reabsorbed into the vastness of the nocturnal scene. | © Musei Vaticani

La serie delle Osservazioni Astronomiche venne commissionata nel 1711 dal conte bolognese Luigi Marsili: questi fece dipingere al pittore Donato Creti tutti i pianeti in tanti quadretti e ne fece dono al papa per convincerlo dell'importanza per la Santa Chiesa di un osservatorio astronomico.

Il dono permise di raggiungere lo scopo, poiché con il sostegno di Clemente XI (pontefice dal 1700-1721) venne inaugurato poco dopo a Bologna il primo osservatorio astronomico pubblico d'Italia.

Le otto tele di piccolo formato raffigurano il sistema planetario allora conosciuto: il Sole. la Luna, Mercurio, Venere, Marte, Giove, Saturno ed una Cometa; manca il pianeta Urano, scoperto solo nel 1781.

Nelle composizioni è dominante la presenza dei pianeti, osservati con telescopi e diversi strumenti ottici (per i quali il pittore ebbe precise istruzioni) da piccole figure umane in abiti settecenteschi, riassorbite nella vastità del paesaggio notturno. | © Musei Vaticani
