Tim Shorten, 1957 | Love Me or Leave Me...

Tim Shorten was born in Bolton, Lancs.

He studied at Bolton College of Art and Design, Preston Polytechnic Department of Fine Art (now UCLan), and Leeds Polytechnic (Leeds Beckett University).

He was Head of Art and Design at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys in Cheshire until 2017.

He currently works in association with Bailey Arts, who are the main agents for Tim's originals and limited editions, and with the Acorn Gallery, Pocklington, North Yorkshire.

Tim Shorten: - "I have never really been able to get along with the late-twentieth-century idea that painting, if it remains at all, should only be about the process of painting.

I love abstract art, yet somehow I'm driven to visual storytelling.

When I'm building compositions - assembling shapes, light and colours - my processes owe more to abstraction than might immediately be apparent from the end product.

Nonetheless, they have to be layered with old-school concerns such as linear perspective and close observation.

I’m old enough and fortunate enough to have been taught to draw and to use the formal elements of art at an early age; then I gradually learned to paint.

Throughout my career, of course I have constantly revised my methods; tried to refine my skills and discovered many new ways of doing things.

I’ve learned partly through the study of other artists, partly through lots of trial and error, and hugely from teaching students for 37 years.

However, all this ongoing development has always been - and for me always will be – a means to an end, not an end in itself.

My paintings must tell a story (which ultimately will be your story rather than mine), and that's just the way it is for me".

Tim Shorten - "Non sono mai stato davvero in grado di andare d'accordo con l'idea della fine del XX secolo che la pittura, se rimane del tutto, dovrebbe riguardare solo il processo della pittura. Amo l'arte astratta, eppure in qualche modo sono spinto alla narrazione visiva".

"Quando costruisco composizioni - assemblando forme, luci e colori - i miei processi devono più all'astrazione di quanto potrebbe essere immediatamente evidente dal prodotto finale.

Tuttavia, devono essere stratificati con preoccupazioni della vecchia scuola come la prospettiva lineare e l'osservazione ravvicinata.

Sono abbastanza grande ed abbastanza fortunato da aver imparato a disegnare e ad usare gli elementi formali dell'arte in tenera età; poi pian piano ho imparato a dipingere.

Nel corso della mia carriera, ovviamente, ho costantemente rivisto i miei metodi; ho cercato di affinare le mie capacità e ho scoperto molti nuovi modi di fare le cose.

Ho imparato in parte attraverso lo studio di altri artisti, in parte attraverso molti tentativi ed errori, ed enormemente dall'insegnamento agli studenti per 37 anni.

I miei dipinti devono raccontare una storia (che alla fine sarà la tua storia piuttosto che la mia), e per me è così".
