Dutch artist Ronald Soeliman (1965-2020) used palette knives when he painted.
The oil paints are thickly applied to the canvas whereby the use of a palette knife gives extra textural feel to the surface.
Sometimes he uses palette knives to suggest small branches in the wet paint.
Often it seems as if he models the paint straight on the canvas itself.
His signature is etched in the paintings as well.
Ronald Soeliman loved to experiment with dimensions, materials, brushstrokes and themes.
Ronald Soeliman was born in Suriname and has Javanese ancestors.
The Soeliman family moved to the Netherlands in 1975.
He studied at the art academies of Kampen and Jakarta (Indonesia), and after graduating from the Minerva art academy in Groningen he established himself as an independent visual artist.
In 2010 he won the prestigious Kunst und Kulturpreis of Dornum (Germany) for his landscapes.
The jury particularly praised him for the light and atmosphere that are captured in his paintings through his special use of color and brushwork.
Soeliman's paintings can be found in private collections all over the world, from Canada and America to Spain, Vietnam and Japan.
