Franz Stracké created this sculpture in terracotta in 1893. The title "Two Mothers" refers to the woman and the dog, positioned at her feet looking upwards, whose puppies she is carrying. This work by Franz Stracké is exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

This sweet scene reflects increasing interest in the lives of fishermen. The statue shows a young woman holding her child, with her dog’s puppies gathered in her apron. Yet life is not a bed of roses for this barefoot fisherman’s wife. She has only two fish in her pouch, and the net that she drags behind her is empty. | Rijksmuseum

Franciscus Xaverius "Frans or Franz" Stracké sr. (1820-1898) was a German/Dutch sculptor.

Frans Stracké, son of sculptor and painter Ignatius Stracké and younger brother of Jean Theodore Stracké, was born in Dorsten, Germany in 1820.

He was taught sculpture in his father’s Berlin studio.

The family moved to Arnhem, Holland when Franz was twenty two. Franz eventually settled in Amsterdam in 1869 and became professor at the Amsterdam Academy in 1870.

Franz Stracke married Johanna Geertruida Verwaijen (1814-1877) in 1847 and they produced a daughter and two sons; the painter, Lodevikus Ignatius Stracke (1856-1934) and the sculptor Franciscus Xavierus Stracké (1850-1888).

In May 1878, Franz was married again to Sara Hendrina Josina van Bosse (1837-1922). He died in Baarn, Utrecht in 1898.

Frans Stracké is often associated with his impressive, grand memorials but he also produced intimate, human pieces such as “The Two Mothers” which is exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. There is a picture of this piece on the next page.

The Rijksmuseum lists twelve works by Franz and the Rotterdam Museum lists one.

Lo scultore Tedesco/Olandese Franciscus Xaverius Stracké (Franz o Frans), -figlio dello scultore e pittore Ignatius Stracké e fratello minore di Jean Theodore Stracké, nacque a Dorsten, in Germania, nel 1820.

Gli fu insegnato scultura nello studio berlinese di suo padre.

La famiglia si trasferì ad Arnhem, in Olanda, quando Franz aveva ventidue anni.

Franz si stabilì ad Amsterdam nel 1869 e divenne professore all'Accademia di Amsterdam nel 1870.

Franz Stracké ha realizzato la scultura in terracotta "Le Due madri" nel 1893.

Il titolo si riferisce alla donna ed al cane, posizionato ai suoi piedi con lo sguardo rivolto verso l'alto, versi i cuccioli.

Questa dolce scena riflette il crescente interesse per la vita dei pescatori.

La statua mostra una giovane pescatrice in piedi con un bambino sul braccio sinistro e due cuccioli del suo cane raccolti nel suo grembiule.

Eppure la vita non è rose e fiori per la moglie di questo pescatore scalzo. Ha solo due pesci nella sua sacca e la rete che si trascina dietro è vuota.

Quest'opera di Franz Stracké è esposta al Rijksmuseum di Amsterdam.
