Nicholas St John Rosse, 1960

Cornish artist Nicholas St.John Rosse has a traditional artistic background, honing his skill over the years. Draftsmanship and realism are central to his painting.

He focuses on the human figure, often exploring how posture conveys meaning.

Nicholas St John Rosse was educated at University College School.

From an early age he became interested in painting, encouraged and enthused by watching the landscape painter Donald Towner at work in the open air and visiting his studio.

After leaving school Nicholas went to see Pietro Annigoni in Italy with a portfolio of drawings and three very beneficial years in Florence followed as a student with the master and attending the Florence Academy:

"I drew, I painted, I learned at first hand about the preparation and use of traditional materials.

Above all I watched Annigoni at work - portraits, landscapes, large-scale religious compositions, sculpture and lithographs. He combined a zest for life with a totally uncompromising dedication to his art - an attitude that has had a lasting influence on his students even though we have all developed different approaches to painting".

Though Nicholas St John Rosse paints a wide range of subject matter, most of his paintings are centered around the human figure and in recent years use beach settings, in particular at the water's edge.

He likes to find ways in which the figure can relate to water and sand both in reality and pictorially.

The visual fusion of water, sand and rock enveloping people fascinates him, and he tries to use these elements as an extension of the model's mood.

Nicholas St John Rosse è nato a Hampstead, Londra ed ha studiato alla University College School.

Fin dalla tenera età si interessò alla pittura, incoraggiato ed entusiasta osservando il paesaggista Donald Towner al lavoro all'aria aperta e visitando il suo studio.

Dopo aver lasciato la scuola Nicholas andò a trovare Pietro Annigoni in Italia con un portfolio di disegni e tre anni molto proficui a Firenze seguiti come allievo con il maestro e frequentando l'Accademia di Firenze:

"Disegnavo, dipingevo, imparavo in prima persona la preparazione e l'uso dei materiali tradizionali.

Soprattutto ho visto Annigoni al lavoro: ritratti, paesaggi, composizioni religiose di grandi dimensioni, sculture e litografie. Ha unito il gusto per la vita con una dedizione totalmente intransigente alla sua arte, un atteggiamento che ha avuto un'influenza duratura sui suoi studenti, anche se tutti abbiamo sviluppato approcci diversi alla pittura".

Sebbene Nicholas St John Rosse dipinga una vasta gamma di soggetti, la maggior parte dei suoi dipinti sono incentrati sulla figura umana e negli ultimi anni utilizzano ambientazioni sulla spiaggia, in particolare sul bordo dell'acqua.

Gli piace trovare modi in cui la figura possa relazionarsi con l'acqua e la sabbia sia nella realtà che pittoricamente.

La fusione visiva di acqua, sabbia e roccia che avvolgono le persone lo affascina e cerca di utilizzare questi elementi come una estensione mood del modello.
