Friedrich August von Kaulbach (1850-1920) was a German portraitist and historical painter.
He was born to a family that included several well known artists and began his studies with his father, Friedrich Kaulbach.
He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts, Nuremberg, where he studied with August von Kreling and Karl Raupp.
He transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, in 1871 and worked with Wilhelm von Diez.
In 1883, he became a teacher there himself.
Along with Franz von Lenbach and Franz von Stuck, he was known as one of the "Malerfürsten" (painter princes) and was one of the highest paid portrait painters in Germany. His works were commissioned by the uppermost social circles there and in America.
His painting, "Children's Carnival" (the five children of mathematician Alfred Pringsheim), shows Katia Pringsheim (far left), who would later marry the writer, Thomas Mann. Several stays in Paris followed.
In 1886, he was appointed Director of the Munich Academy and was ennobled.
He was also a member of the Prussian Academy of Art in Berlin.
In 1897, he married Frida Scotta, a famous Danish violist.
His daughter Hedda married the sculptor, Toni Stadler, and his daughter Mathilde, who was a singer, married the painter Max Beckmann.
His brother, Sigmund (1854-1894), was also a painter, as were his half-siblings, Anton and Antonie. His half-sister, Isidore, was a novelist.
In 1893, he built the Kaulbach-Villa in Ohlstadt, which served as a second summer residence.

Friedrich August von Kaulbach (Monaco di Baviera, 2 giugno 1850 - Ohlstadt, 26 luglio 1920) è stato un pittore Tedesco noto per i suoi ritratti dell'alta società del tempo, spesso nel gusto francese di fine secolo.
Era figlio di un pittore di argomento storico, Friedrich Kaulbach e pronipote di Wilhelm von Kaulbach. Studiò all'Accademia reale di belle arti di Norimberga con August von Kreling, suo parente per matrimonio, e con Karl Raupp.
Si trasferì a Monaco di Baviera nel 1871 e fece poi parte di un gruppo che si definì i principi della pittura monacense, con Franz von Lenbach e Franz von Stuck.
Iniziò una carriera di ritrattista e divenne uno dei meglio pagati in questo settore in tutto l'Impero tedesco.
Dipinse ritratti della più rilevante clientela mondana dell'epoca, sia tedesca che statunitense.
La sua tela Kinderkarneval (I bambini a carnevale) del 1888 è la sua opera più famosa. Rappresenta i cinque bambini della famiglia Pringsheim in costume di Pierrot e Katia Pringsheim, futura sposa di Thomas Mann.
Il famoso scrittore ne aveva una riproduzione in camera sua.
Il suo dipinto allegorico Germania, realizzato nel 1914, è famoso anche come ultimo testimone di un'epoca passata.
Kaulbach fece diversi viaggi a Parigi e venne poi nominato direttore dell'Accademia delle belle arti di Monaco di Baviera nel 1886 e fu membro dell'Accademia delle arti di Berlino.
Sua figlia Hedda sposò lo scultore Toni Stadler e l'altra figlia Mathilde fu sposata in seconde nozze da Max Beckmann.
