Judy Nimtz, 1973 | Figurative painter

Judy Nimtz was born in Taiwan and raised on the island of O'ahu in Hawaii.

After completion of her MFA in 2008 from Laguna College of Art and Design, Judy made Southern California her home.

Nimtz has exhibited her work in several solo and group exhibitions in the Los Angeles area including a joint survey exhibition with Kenny Harris at The Santa Monica College Barrett Art Gallery, Santa Monica, CA (2012) and multiple Artist-In-Residencies in Siena and Tuscany, Italy (2011-2015).

She has been exhibiting with KDR since 2010.

Judy Nimtz is known stylistically for paintings of solitary, contemplative figures often set in outdoor environs.

Aiming to achieve a "quiet, introspective" mood, Nimtz thoughtfully stages her models in bright sunlight on lava rocks under the ultra blue sky of her native Hawaii.

With their cool, marble-like flesh and graceful poses, Nimtz’s figures reference the genre of 19th century society portraiture and the Pre-Raphaelites.

Each piece focuses on the strength of its subject - a figure commanding rather than isolated by the surrounding space.

During an undergraduate study in Italy, Nimtz spent time in Venice, Florence, and Rome and was fascinated with the presentation of solitary saints and patrons in 13th century altarpieces.

She would later echo those spatial constructs in her own work, controlling the space by containing her figures in extreme vertical or horizontal formats portrayed in oil glazed panels.

Dopo aver completato il suo MFA nel 2008 presso il Laguna College of Art and Design, Judy ha fatto della California meridionale la sua casa.

Nimtz ha esposto il suo lavoro in diverse mostre personali e collettive nell'area di Los Angeles, inclusa una mostra congiunta con Kenny Harris presso la Barrett Art Gallery del Santa Monica College, Santa Monica, CA (2012) e diverse residenze di artisti a Siena e Toscana, Italia (2011-2015).

Espone con KDR dal 2010. Judy Nimtz è stilisticamente nota per i dipinti di figure solitarie e contemplative spesso ambientate in ambienti all'aperto.

Con l'obiettivo di raggiungere uno stato d'animo "tranquillo ed introspettivo", Nimtz mette in scena con cura i suoi modelli in piena luce solare su rocce laviche sotto il cielo ultra blu delle sue native Hawaii.

Con la loro carne fresca, simile al marmo e le pose aggraziate, le figure di Nimtz fanno riferimento al genere della ritrattistica del XIX secolo ed ai Preraffaelliti.

Ogni pezzo si concentra sulla forza del suo soggetto: una figura dominante piuttosto che isolata dallo spazio circostante.

Durante uno studio universitario in Italia, Nimtz trascorse del tempo a Venezia, Firenze e Roma e rimase affascinato dalla presentazione di santi e mecenati solitari nelle pale d'altare del XIII secolo.

In seguito avrebbe fatto eco a quelle costruzioni spaziali nel suo lavoro, controllando lo spazio contenendo le sue figure in formati verticali od orizzontali estremi, ritratti in pannelli smaltati ad olio.
