HongNian Zhang, 1947 ~ Chinese-born American painter

HongNian Zhang is an painter, who works in the Western academic tradition. Works by this gifted artist have been exhibited and acquired by museums, galleries, corporations and private collectors across the globe.
Growing up in China, Mr. Zhang became accomplished in art at a young age. He was one of the top students at the highly selective and prestigious Central Art Academy’s Affiliated High School in Beijing. The instruction there was rigorous, paving the road for his future success. Unfortunately, the Cultural Revolution broke out and temporarily forestalled his art career. In 1970, Zhang and his classmates were sent to a forced labor camp in the remote countryside. He labored there for 4 years and creating art was prohibited.

Sabin Balasa (1932-2008) ~ The Galaxy of Love

Romanian painter Sabin Bălaşa was born in the village of Dobriceni, Olt county. He gratuated from the Fine Arts Institute in 1955. He is a member of many international Academies of Art and winner of a great number of prizes for painting and cartoons.
He naturally started from the traditions of the Romanian art, which he assimilated in a creative way, and studied with interest and fervour the history and mythology of the Romanian people, pledging himself to conjure up a fascinating universe of great expressive power, conveying to the onlooker an impression or a rare strength. Whether he paints such heroes of the national pantheon as Decebalus, Stephen the Great, Balcescu or Eminescu, evokes characters of legend, epic or ballad or creates images living beyond time and space, Sabin Balasa constantly remains faithful to the most generous and noble human ideals.
The Hall of the Lost Footfalls was painted over a period of 10 years and consists in 18 great wall paintings. Main themes include youth, the history and poetry of the Romanian people.
During Romania's Communist years, Balasa became infamous for painting propaganda works, most notably cultivating the personalities of Nicolae and Elena Ceauşescu.
The painter shows a rare power of invention and transfiguration. He proposes a parallel fabulous mirific world, full of mystery and exotic splendour. Among Balasa's most notable works are several large-scale fresco paintings, such as those decorating the inside of the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi.

Elena Bond, 1965 ~ City Reflections

Russian painter Елена Бонд was born in Russia in the beautiful old city of Samara to a military doctor and a classical pianist. Elena started drawing at a very early age, using everything from a pencil to her mother's make-up. She came from a family of artists where her great-grandfather and grandfather were both artists.
Because of her father's job in the military, Elena's family had to move around the Soviet Union frequently. She'd lived in Kazakhstan, Byelorussia, Ukraine, Latvia, Litva, St.Petersburg and Moscow. The largest part of her childhood was spent in Germany. Because of the frequent lifestyle changes, Elena was able to preserve memories of many different cultures and experiences. At the age of 11, she attended her first art school in St.Petersburg, Russia.

Canaletto | Vedute of Venice

A Veduta - italian "view", is a highly detailed, usually large-scale painting of a cityscape or some other vista. This genre of landscape originated in Flanders, where artists such as Paul Brill painted vedute as early as the 16th century. In the 17th century dutch painters made a specialty of detailed and accurate recognizable city and landscapes that appealed to the sense of local pride of the wealthy Dutch middle class. An archetypal example is Johannes Vermeer's View of Delft.

Olga Oreshnikova, 1962

Russian painter Ольга Орешникова was born in St Petersburg, a member of one of the most prominent families of artists. Her paternal grandfather, Professor Oreshnikov, was Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg from 1953-1978. He was also one of the leading artistic figures in the city and a member of the Soviet Academy. Olga’s maternal grandfather was Roman Kotlarevsky, a renowned composer and professor of composition at the Conservatory of Music. Her parents and close relatives are all either painters, art historians or practising musicians.

Gürbüz Doğan Ekşioğlu was born in Mesudiye in Ordu Province, Turkey. He studied graphics at the State College of Fine Arts in İstanbul named Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts today, where he is still teaching as an assistant professor. Spanish painter Joan Beltrán Bofill [1939-2009] was born in Barcelona. Joan attended the prestigious Casa Lonja, where several artists from the Catalan School, including Picasso, had also studied. Georgi Matevosjan, 1948 | Surrealist painter

Armenian painter Георгий Матевосян was born in Baku, the son of the USSR State Prize laureate writer Hrant Matevosyan.
In 1975 he graduated from the Volgograd Institute specializing in architecture. Worked as an architect, designer, studied jewelry making and small plastics. As a student, he did not part with a notebook, constantly sketching portraits of his friends.
Today, the work of the Armenian painter are in museums and private collections in Russia, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Canada, America and Japan.

Teodor Axentowicz ~ Academic painter

Teodor Axentowicz [1859-1938] was a Polish-Armenian painter and university professor. A renowned artist of his times, he was also the rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. As an artist, Axentowicz was famous for his portraits and subtle scenes of Hutsul life, set in the Carpathians.
In Paris, he received the prestigious title of Officier d'Académie Ordre des Palmes Académiques and Member of Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair, Axentowicz received a Special Commemorative Award in recognition of distinguished service in connection with various national sections of the Department of Art.
In addition to Society of Polish Artists "Sztuka", he was also a member of the Vienna Secession and Hagenbund.

Irene Sheri, 1968 ~ A special day

Irene Sheri was born in the city of Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, Ukraine. Her diverse heritage probably makes her one of the brightest example of a new breed of inter-cultural artists emerging from a "Europe without borders". A mix of Bulgarian and French, she was born and raised in the Ukrainian city of Odessa, where cultures freely mixed, making Odessa one of the most colorful, bright and multinational cities in the world.
Her works are in many important collections, and presented by galleries in France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Russia and the U.S. She appeared at the Roger Yost Gallery in 2008 along with Andrew Atroshenko - another St. Petersburg Academy alumnus - at a special exhibition called "From Russia with Love".
