© BBC - This year's Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded to the US poet Louise Glück.

Glück was recognised for "her unmistakable poetic voice, that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal" said the Swedish Academy, which oversees the award.

The Academy added she was "surprised" when she received their phone call.

Glück, born in New York, lives in Massachusetts and is also professor of English at Yale University.

The Academy's permanent secretary Mats Malm said he had spoken to Glück just before making the announcement.

"The message came as a surprise, but a welcome one as far as I could tell" - he said.

She is the fourth woman to win the prize for Literature since 2010, and only the 16th since the Nobel prizes were first awarded in 1901.

The last American to win was Bob Dylan in 2016.

Glück won the Pulitzer Prize🎨 in 1993 for her collection "The Wild Iris" and the National Book Award in 2014.

Her other honours include the 2001 Bollingen Prize for Poetry, the Wallace Stevens Award, given in 2008, and a National Humanities Medal, awarded in 2015.

Her poetry focuses on the painful reality of being human, dealing with themes such as death, childhood and family life.

She also takes inspiration from Greek mythology and its characters, such as Persephone and Eurydice, who are often the victims of betrayal.

The Academy said her 2006 collection Averno was a "masterly collection, a visionary interpretation of the myth of Persephone's descent into Hell in the captivity of Hades, the god of death".

The chair of the Nobel prize committee, Anders Olsson, also praised the poet's "candid and uncompromising" voice, which is "full of humour and biting wit".

Her 12 collections of poetry are "characterised by a striving for clarity", he added, comparing her with Emily Dickinson with her "severity and unwillingness to accept simple tenets of faith".

Glück was editor of The Best American Poetry 1993 and she served as poet laureate consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress from 2003-04.

The prize is given to the person who has "produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction".

16 women have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) was the first woman to be awarded in 1909. Selma Lagerlöf was awarded five years before she was elected to the Swedish Academy, the Nobel Prize awarding institution responsible for selecting Nobel Laureates in Literature.

La poetessa americana Louise Glück, Premio Nobel per la Letteratura 2020, è nata nel 1943 a New York e vive a Cambridge, nel Massachusetts dove insegna inglese alla Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

Ha debuttato nel 1968 con Firstborn ed è stata presto riconosciuta come uno dei poeti più importanti della letteratura contemporanea americana.

E' già stata premiata con prestigiosi Premi🎨 tra cui il Pulitzer nel 1993 ed il National Book Award nel 2014. Nel 2003 è stata insignita del titolo di poeta laureata.

E' autrice di dodici raccolte di poesia e di alcuni volumi di saggi sulla poesia, tutti caratterizzati dalla ricerca della chiarezza.

Al centro delle sue opere, l'infanzia e la vita familiare, lo stretto rapporto con genitori e fratelli. Nelle sue poesie affronta le illusioni del sé.

Glück cerca l'universale, e in questo si ispira ai miti e ai motivi classici, presenti nella maggior parte delle sue opere.

Le voci di Didone, Persefone ed Euridice - gli abbandonati, i puniti, i traditi - sono maschere di un sé in trasformazione, tanto personale quanto universalmente valido.

Tra le sue raccolte, che l'hanno fatta paragonare a Emily Dickinson, 'Il trionfo di Achille' (1985) e 'Ararat' (1990), The wild Iris (1992, uscito in Italia per Giani Editore con il titolo "L'iris selvatico"), Averno (2006, edito in Italia da Dante & Descartes).
