Pavlos Samios (1948-2021) | Metaphysical / Symbolist painter


Pavlos Samios - Παύλος Σάμιος - was a Greek painter and professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts.
Samios was born in Athens, Greece. His interest about art rose during his early childhood when he used to spend many hours at his father's workshop (Samios’ father was a shoemaker).
As a teenager he worked at Dionysios Karoussos icon-painting studio and at the same time he attended drawing lessons under Panos Sarafianos so that he could pass the exams in order to enter the School of Fine Arts where he became accepted in 1969.


He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Nikos Nikolaou and Yannis Moralis and he graduated in 1972.
In early 1978 Samios organised his first solo exhibition in Athens where he exhibited a total of 36 paintings inspired by Agion Oros.
From 1978-1992 he lived and worked in Paris.
During his stay in France he became associated with Yannis Tsarouchis, who had a major influence on Samios. Manos Hatzidakis was another person who influenced Samios.
In his paintings Samios express a symbolic and metaphysical vision. He uses several painting techniques (fresco, tempera, etc.) which are characteristic of his various periods of work. His works are found in private collections, museums and cultural institutions worldwide (Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Greece, Andros Museum of Contemporary Art etc.).
Since 2000 he is a professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts.
His last solo exhibition took place from September to October 2020 in the Skoufa Gallery with the title "Coffee Paradise".
Pavlos Samios died on 04 February 2021.

Pavlos Samios - Παύλος Σάμιος - era un pittore e professore Greco presso la Scuola di Belle Arti di Atene. Samios è nato ad Atene, in Grecia.
Il suo interesse per l'arte è cresciuto durante la sua prima infanzia, quando trascorreva molte ore nel laboratorio di suo padre (il padre di Samios era un calzolaio).
Da adolescente ha lavorato presso lo studio di pittura di icone Dionysios Karoussos e allo stesso tempo ha frequentato lezioni di disegno con Panos Sarafianos in modo da poter superare gli esami per entrare alla School of Fine Arts dove è stato accettato nel 1969.
Ha studiato alla Athens School of Fine Arts con Nikos Nikolaou e Yannis Moralis e si è laureato nel 1972.


All'inizio del 1978 Samios ha organizzato la sua prima mostra personale ad Atene dove ha esposto un totale di 36 dipinti ispirati ad Agion Oros.
Dal 1978-1992 ha vissuto e lavorato a Parigi. Durante il suo soggiorno in Francia si associò a Yannis Tsarouchis, che ebbe una grande influenza su Samios.
Manos Hatzidakis era un'altra persona che ha influenzato Samios. Nei suoi dipinti Samios esprime una visione simbolica e metafisica. Utilizza diverse tecniche pittoriche (affresco, tempera, ecc.).
Caratteristiche dei suoi vari periodi di lavoro. Le sue opere si trovano in collezioni private, musei e istituzioni culturali in tutto il mondo (Museo macedone di arte contemporanea, Galleria nazionale greca, Museo di arte contemporanea di Andros ecc.).
Dal 2000 era professore alla Athens School of Fine Arts.
La sua ultima mostra personale si è svolta da settembre a ottobre 2020 nella Galleria Skoufa con il titolo "Coffee Paradise".
Pavlos Samios è morto il 4 febbraio 2021.
