Edgar Maxence | Symbolist painter

Edgard Maxence (1871-1954) was a French Symbolist painter.
He was taught by Elie Delaunay and Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
He is a contemporary of Henri Evenepoel, Jules Flandrin, Albert Marquet, Henri Matisse, Léon Printemps, Georges Rouault and other notable alumni from this famous school.
He exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Français from 1894 until 1939, and was active on the salon's committees and juries.



Maxence combined a highly trained technique with a taste for medieval and mythical subjects and for hermetic imagery; he exhibited at the Salon de la Rose+Croix from 1895 to 1897.

In 1920 he painted the image of Our Lady on the vaulted ceiling of the choir in the Basilica of the Rosary in Lourdes.
He also illustrated the book Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc (1945) by Jean-Joseph-Léonce Villepelet (Bishop of Nantes 1936–1966).

Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1900, he was elevated to the rank of officer in 1927. He was elected to the Institute in 1924.










Edgard Maxence (nato Edgar Henri Marie Aristide Maxence a Nantes il 17 settembre 1871 - morto a La Bernerie-en-Retz nel 1954) è stato un pittore simbolista Francese.
Allievo di Jules-Élie Delaunay e Gustave Moreau alla Scuola di Belle Arti di Parigi, Edgard Maxence espone dal 1894 al Salon des artistes français.
Dopo varie menzioni ed una medaglia d'oro all'Esposizione Universale del 1900, ricevette una medaglia d'oro nel 1914.
Il suo gusto per le scene medievali idealizzate e la loro estetica simbolista lo portarono ad essere invitato ad esporre al Salon de la Rose-Croix dal 1895 al 1897.


La sua tecnica combina una pasta relativamente spessa e da muratura con una certa purezza delle linee.
Come Armand Point, usa la tempera (Les Fleurs du lac, 1900) o fondi dorati che accentuano l'aspetto primitivo delle scene mistiche nonostante il trattamento realistico dei volti (Concert d'anges, 1897, Beauvais, departmental museum de l'Oise) , ma usa anche cera mista ad olio.
Il suo successo lo incoraggerà a moltiplicare ritratti e paesaggi di ispirazione simbolista molto tempo dopo l'estinzione di questo movimento.
Edgard Maxence progettò in particolare le scatole per tre grandi mosaici murali che adornano la Basilica di Nostra Signora del Rosario a Lourdes.
