Alfons Walde (1891-1958) was an Austrian artist and architect.
Walde is known best for his winter landscapes and farming images, especially skiing and sporting scenes, painted in tempera or impastoed oil paint.
Many of his paintings can be seen in the Museum gallery in Kitzbühel.
Life and career
Walde was born in Oberndorf (near Kitzbühel) in Tyrol. He produced his first watercolour and tempera paintings during his school days.
From 1910-1914 he studied architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna, while continuing his education as a painter.
In the Danubian metropolis he moved in artistic circles that included Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, and he became influenced by Ferdinand Hodler.
In 1911 Walde had his first exhibition in Innsbruck, and in 1913 presented four farm pictures at the prestigious Vienna Secession exhibition.
From 1914-1917 he actively participated in World War I as a Tyrolean Kaiserschütze in the high mountains.
After returning to Kitzbühel, he fully devoted himself to painting and participated again in exhibitions of the Secession and the Vienna Künstlerhaus throughout the 1920s.
He was active as a graphic artist, and beginning in 1926 designed many posters.
By around 1928 Walde had finally found his own characteristic style, one that gave expression to both the Tyrolean mountain scenery - particularly the living winter landscapes - and its robust people through the use of highly reduced drawings and pastel colouring.
Throughout the rest of his artistic career his work stayed with the subject of his homeland, and retained the same distinct native style.

Walde è noto soprattutto per i suoi paesaggi invernali e le sue immagini agricole, in particolare le scene di sci e sport, dipinte a tempera o ad olio impasto.
Molti dei suoi dipinti possono essere ammirati nella galleria del museo di Kitzbühel.
Vita e carriera
Walde è nato a Oberndorf (vicino a Kitzbühel) in Tirolo.
Ha prodotto i suoi primi dipinti ad acquerello e tempera durante i suoi giorni di scuola.
Dal 1910-1914 studiò architettura alla Technische Hochschule di Vienna, continuando la sua formazione come pittore.
Nella metropoli danubiana si trasferì in ambienti artistici che includevano Egon Schiele e Gustav Klimt, e fu influenzato da Ferdinand Hodler.
Nel 1911 Walde tenne la sua prima mostra ad Innsbruck e nel 1913 presentò quattro quadri di fattoria alla prestigiosa mostra della Secessione di Vienna.

Dopo essere tornato a Kitzbühel, si dedicò completamente alla pittura e partecipò nuovamente alle mostre della Secessione e del Künstlerhaus di Vienna negli anni '20.
Fu attivo come artista grafico ed, a partire dal 1926, disegnò numerosi poster.
Verso il 1928 Walde aveva finalmente trovato il suo stile caratteristico, che esprimeva sia lo scenario montano tirolese - in particolare i paesaggi invernali viventi - sia le sue persone robuste attraverso l'uso di disegni altamente ridotti e colorazioni pastello.
Per tutto il resto della sua carriera artistica il suo lavoro è rimasto sul tema della sua terra natale e ha mantenuto lo stesso distinto stile nativo.
Alfons Walde morì di insufficienza cardiaca l'11 dicembre 1958 a Kitzbühel.
