Simon Willem Maris (1873-1935) was a Dutch painter best known as a portrait artist.
He was the son of Dutch landscape painter Willem Maris of the Hague School.
He was born in The Hague. Simon Maris was a student of his father Willem Maris and subsequently studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Arts of Antwerp.
Isabella, also known as Young Woman with a Fan, is a 1906 painting by Simon Maris.
It is currently in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
He then spent some time in Brussels and made study trips to Paris and Italy.
In 1900 he settled in Amsterdam.
In 1903 he traveled with his friend Piet Mondrian for a few months to Spain.
Together with Mondrian and Arnold Marc Gorter he would regularly paint in the following years on the Gein River, where he also drew Mondrian's portrait in 1906.
After his marriage to Cornelia den Breejen in 1908, he worked in Zandvoort during the summers.
Maris became especially famous as a portrait artist, mostly of worldly women, often commissioned.
He also made more informal portraits of mothers with children or women reading, using his wife and children as models.
He also painted cityscapes, beach scenes, landscapes and still lifes.
He worked in both a realistic and impressionistic style, with close attention to how sunlight works.
His work has a striking relationship with that of Albert Roelofs, also the son of a well-known Hague artist-Willem Roelofs.
Maris was a well-known figure in Amsterdam artist circles around 1900.
He died in 1935 at the age of 61 in Amsterdam.

Simon Willem Maris (1873-1935) è stato un pittore Olandese meglio conosciuto come ritrattista.
Era il figlio del paesaggista olandese Willem Maris della Scuola dell'Aia.
È nato a L'Aia. Simon Maris era studente di suo padre Willem Maris e successivamente studiò alla Royal Academy of Fine Arts dell'Aia e alla Royal Academy of Fine Arts di Anversa.
Trascorre poi un periodo a Bruxelles e compie viaggi di studio a Parigi ed in Italia.
Nel 1900 si stabilì ad Amsterdam.
Nel 1903 viaggiò per alcuni mesi con l'amico Piet Mondrian in Spagna.
Insieme a Mondriani ed Arnold Marc Gorter dipinse regolarmente negli anni successivi sul fiume Gein, dove disegnò anche il ritratto di Mondrian nel 1906.
Dopo il matrimonio con Cornelia den Breejen nel 1908, lavorò durante l'estate a Zandvoort.
Maris divenne particolarmente famoso come ritrattista, soprattutto di donne mondane, spesso su commissione.
Realizzò anche ritratti più informali di madri con bambini o donne che leggevano, usando sua moglie ed i suoi figli come modelli.
Dipinse anche paesaggi urbani, scene di spiaggia, paesaggi e nature morte.
Ha lavorato sia in uno stile realistico che impressionista, con molta attenzione a come funziona la luce solare.
Il suo lavoro ha un rapporto sorprendente con quello di Albert Roelofs, anche lui figlio di un noto artista dell'Aia, Willem Roelofs.
Maris era una figura ben nota nei circoli artistici di Amsterdam intorno al 1900.
Morì nel 1935 all'età di 61 anni ad Amsterdam.
