Hubert Sattler | Landscape painter

Hubert Sattler (21 January 1817 - 3 April 1904) worked under pseudonyms Louis Ritchard, E Grossen and Stähly-Rychen, was an Austrian landscape painter.
Hubert Sattler was born in Salzburg. His father, Johann Michael Sattler, was also a landscape painter and created the Sattler Panorama of Salzburg in 1825-29. Hubert donated it and more than 300 of his own works to the city in 1870; the panorama is on permanent display in the Panorama Museum inside the Salzburg Museum, together with a rotating exhibit drawn from approximately 150 of Herbert's cosmoramas held by the museum.

Guillermo Gómez Gil | Seascape painter

Guillermo Gómez Gil [1862-1942] was born in Malaga in 1862. He showed an interest in art from a very early age and began training as an artist in 1878 as a pupil of the San Telmo School of Fine Arts in Malaga. He must have made good progress as he ventured to compete for the Barroso prize awarded by the council as an incentive to students of the school, although he did not win. He tried again in 1881 and was equally unsuccessful.
In 1880 he took part in his first group show, the Art, Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition organised by Malaga council. The works he entered attest to his preference for seascapes as they were entitled Puesta de sol (“Sunset”) and Marina (“Seascape”); the former was acquired by the council for 375 pesetas.

Charles Hoffbauer | Cityscape painter

Charles Constantin Joesph Hoffbauer (June 28, 1875 - July 26, 1957) was a French-born artist who became a United States citizen. He painted a wide variety of subjects, including many that depicted scenes of historical interest.

Charles Hoffbauer was born in Paris.

His parents, Féodor Hubert Hoffbauer and Marie Clemence Belloc Hoffbauer, were of Alsatian origin. Féodor Hoffbauer was a well-known archeologist, architect and artist, and likely influenced his son's interest in history.

As a child, Charles sometimes assisted his father in conducting research.

The elder Hoffbauer's 1882 book on Paris architecture, Paris à Travers les Ages, has been updated over the years and remains in print with the latest edition published in 2007.

David Burliuk | The Father of Russian Futurism

David Davidovich Burlyuk, Burlyuk also spelled Burliuk /Дави́д Дави́дович Бурлю́к (1882-1967), Russian poet, painter, critic, and publisher who became the centre of the Russian Futurist movement, even though his output in the fields of poetry and painting was smaller than that of his peers. Burlyuk excelled at discovering talent and was one of the first to publish the poetry of Velimir Khlebnikov and to recognize Vladimir Mayakovsky’s brilliance.

It was largely because of Burlyuk’s efforts that the Russian avant-garde became known in Europe and the United States.

Maximilien Luce | Neo-impressionist painter

Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was born in Paris to an artisan’s family.

He worked as a printmaker in his early years then, around 1880, devoted his career to painting.

Camille Pissarro, who shared his anarchist convictions, introduced him to the Neo-Impressionist group in 1887.

Charles Warren Eaton | Tonalist landscapes painter

Charles Warren Eaton (1857-1937) was an American artist best known for his Tonalist landscapes. He earned the nickname "The pine tree painter" for his numerous depictions of Eastern White Pine trees.
Eaton's entrance into the art world coincided with a profound change in the prevailing artistic style in America. In the late 1870s the highly realistic and detailed Hudson River School manner, which had dominated the American art scene for over forty years, was giving way to a much looser, moodier style that younger artists were bringing home from Europe. This new style, which would later come to be known as Tonalism, emphasized low-key colors and tended to depict intimate settings rather than scenes of grandeur. Eaton adopted this new style in New York and became friends with two other Tonalist artists, Leonard Ochtman and Ben Foster.

Teresa Elliott, 1953 | Hyperrealist painter

Teresa Elliott was born in Weatherford, Texas. As a young adult she sketched portraits building a foundation for a career in the fine arts.

In 1976 while attending The University of Kansas she worked as a forensic sketch artist for the Lawrence Kansas Police Department.

Constant Troyon | The Barbizon school of painters

Constant Troyon (Sèvres August 28, 1810 – February 21, 1865), French painter, was born in Sèvres, near Paris, where his father was connected with the famous manufactory of porcelain.
Troyon was an animal painter of the first rank, and was closely associated with the artists who painted around Barbizon. The technical qualities of his methods of painting are most masterly; his drawing is excellent, and his composition always interesting. It was only comparatively late in life that Troyon found his métier, but when he realized his power of painting animals he produced a fairly large number of good pictures in a few years.

Fred Cuming RA, 1930 | Landscape painter

Fred Cuming is a Senior Royal Academician and, when elected RA in 1974, was the youngest member to be elected to the Royal Academy of Arts. His artistic career has spanned over sixty years so far, and he has created (and sold) a body of work of some 5,000 paintings. Particularly fascinated by the observation and depiction of light and atmosphere, Fred Cuming is now one of England's foremost and best-loved contemporary Landscape painters. 

Fred Cuming was born in 1930 in London and trained at the Sidcup School of Art between 1945-1949. After National Service he studied at the Royal College of Art for four years and was awarded the Abbey Travel Scholarship to visit Rome. In 1969 he was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Academy, becoming a full member in 1974. At that time, he was the yougest member ever elected. Fred has also been a member of the New English Art Club since 1960.

Maria Rita Pires, 1975 | Figurative and Paper sculptor

Maria Rita was born in Minde, Portugal, and felt her “fascination for clay” with only eleven years old. John Frederick Lewis | Orientalist / Genre painter

John Frederick Lewis RA (London 14 July 1804 - 15 August 1876) was an British painter. He specialized in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes in exquisitely detailed watercolour or oils.

Lewis lived for several years in a traditional mansion in Cairo, and (after his return to England) painted highly detailed works showing both realistic Genre scenes of Middle Eastern life and more idealized scenes in upper class Egyptian interiors with no traces of Western cultural influence yet apparent.

Narcisse Diaz de la Peña | The Barbizon school of painters

Narcisse-Virgilio Díaz de la Peña (1808-1876) was born in 1808 in Bordeaux, of Spanish parents who had fled the Peninsular Wars.

After their early deaths, he grew up in foster care at Meudon.

At thirteen, an infection, caused by an insect sting or snake bite, necessitated the amputation of his left leg.

In 1823 he began an apprenticeship in painting on porcelain at a china factory in Paris, where he met Jules Dupré (1811-1889), who was to become his lifelong friend.

Théodore Rousseau | The Barbizon school of painters

Edward Mitchell Bannister | Tonalist painter

Bannister was born in St. Andrews, New Brunswick and moved to New England in the late 1840s, where he remained for the rest of his life.

Nicola Simbari | Palette knife painter

Nicola Simbari (1927-2012) was an Italian painter, known for working in the Impressionism style.

As a painter, Simbari initially was interested in mainly the avant-garde movement. Braque was his first god, and later followed his admiration for Miró. Gradually, he became involved in an effort to tell a story with his paintings, so he changed to a more introverted approach.

Meanwhile, Simbari began developing an admiration for Gauguin, Van Gogh, and de Staël. Gradually finding himself free from influence, he developed the style now recognized as Simbaresco.
