Alfredo Roldàn was born in Madrid. At the age of 22, having had no formal artistic training, he started drawing professionally, selling his work in street markets, at the same time presenting his work at major competitions, of which he won several.

It was on winning the award granted by the City Council of Madrid in 1994 that he was discovered by a major gallery.

His winning painting now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art, Madrid.

The primary subjects of all of the paintings in the series are stacks of hay in the field after the harvest season.

The title refers primarily to a twenty-five canvas series (Wildenstein Index Number 1266-1290) begun in the end of summer of 1890 and continued through the following spring, using that year's harvest.

Johannes Vermeer | Baroque Era painter

He was born in Delft in 1632 and lived there until his death in 1675.

His father, Reynier Vermeer, was a silk weaver who produced caffa, a fine satin fabric, but in 1631 he also registered in the Saint Luke’s Guild in Delft as a master art dealer.

By 1641 he was sufficiently prosperous to purchase a large house, the “Mechelen”, which contained an inn on the market square in Delft and from which he probably also sold paintings.
