The oak tree standing behind the main group gives its name to the work and separates the figures from the background landscape and the ruins of the Caracalla Baths on the left.

Wassily Kandinsky🎨 / Василий Кандинский (born December 4 [December 16, New Style], 1866, Moscow, Russia-died December 13, 1944, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France), Russian-born artist, one of the first creators of pure Abstraction in modern painting.
After successful avant-garde exhibitions, he founded the influential Munich group Der Blaue Reiter ("The Blue Rider"; 1911-14) and began completely abstract painting🎨.
His forms evolved from fluid and organic to geometric and, finally, to pictographic (e.g., Tempered Élan, 1944).

  • Early years

Kandinsky’s mother was a Muscovite, one of his great-grandmothers a Mongolian princess, and his father a native of Kyakhta, a Siberian town near the Chinese border; the boy thus grew up with a cultural heritage that was partly European and partly Asian.
His family was genteel, well-to-do, and fond of travel; while still a child he became familiar with Venice, Rome, Florence, the Caucasus, and the Crimean Peninsula.
At Odessa, where his parents settled in 1871, he completed his secondary schooling and became an amateur performer on the piano and the cello. He also became an amateur painter, and he later recalled, as a sort of first impulse toward abstraction, an adolescent conviction that each colour had a mysterious life of its own.

Claude Monet | Promenades / Le passeggiate

With Manet's🎨 assistance, Monet🎨 found lodging in suburban Argenteuil in late 1871, a move that initiated one of the most fertile phases of his career.
Impressionism evolved in the late 1860s from a desire to create full-scale, multi-figure depictions of ordinary people in casual outdoor situations. At its purest, impressionism was attuned to landscape painting, a subject Monet favored.
In Woman with a Parasol - Madame Monet and Her Son, his skill as a figure painter is equally evident. Contrary to the artificial conventions of academic portraiture, Monet delineated the features of his sitters as freely as their surroundings.

Orazio Gentileschi | Portrait of a Young Woman as a Sibyl, 1620-1626

The young woman in this painting by Orazio Gentileschi🎨 has been identified by scholars as the artist's daughter, Artemisia Gentileschi🎨. A renowned painter herself, she trained in her father's workshop and established a European reputation that allowed her a life of independence rare for a woman of her day.
One of the most important followers of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571/72-1610)🎨, Orazio Gentileschi combined a refined and elegant personal manner with Caravaggio's powerful sense of realism.
In this painting, the identification of Artemisia as a Sibyl - defined in ancient Greek literature and legend as a woman with the gift of prophecy - may be based on what happened during the trial of Roman artist Agostino Tassi, whom she accused of rape.

Artemisia Gentileschi | Mary Magdalene as Melancholy, 1622-1625

Mary Magdalene as Melancholy is a 1622-1625 painting by Artemisia Gentileschi🎨 - (Italian Baroque Era painter🎨, 1593-1652), showing Mary Magdalene as a personification of Melancholia. It is now in the Museo Soumaya in Mexico City.
It is an autograph copy of another work on the subject by the artist now in the Treasury of Seville Cathedral, although X-ray examination has shown that the fabric on the saint's shoulder is wider in the Seville version and was probably added later to fit with the canons of the Catholic Church.
This has also demonstrated that the two faces are different - the Mexico City version seems to be a self-portrait by comparison with Judith Slaying Holofernes and Cleopatra - and that there are corrections in the brushstrokes in the Seville version but not in the Mexico City variant. | © Wikipedia

Leonardo da Vinci | Adoration of the Magi, 1482

Current location: The Uffizi Gallery🎨
Collection: Painting
Location: Room 35
Technique: Drawing in charcoal, watercolour ink and oil on wood
Size: 244 x 240 cm
Inventory: Inv. 1890 n. 1594

A document from July 1481 states that Leonardo da Vinci🎨 had received a commission from the Augustinian monks to paint a panel for the high altar in the church of San Donato in Scopeto, outside Florence’s city walls.
The painting, which Leonardo undertook to finish within 30 months, had the Adoration of the Magi as its subject, i.e., the celebration of the feast of the Epiphany when, according to St Augustine, all people respond to the call of Christ.
For this subject, Leonardo studied an extremely complex composition, rich with figures, set out in a semi-circle, with the Virgin and Child as the focus. In the foreground, the kneeling Magi offer their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Jesus.
Leonardo has painted a background with ruined buildings and clashes between knights on horseback, while on the left, we can see work on a building, perhaps a temple, with in the foreground, two flights of stairs, like the presbytery of several Mediaeval churches (San Miniato al Monte in Florence, for example).
