This is van Gogh’s last view of a plain outside Arles that he often painted since settling in the south of France in 1888.

He wrote to the painter Paul Signac "everything is small there ... even the mountains, as in certain Japanese landscapes, which is the reason why the subject attracted me".

The snow-capped peak on the right (a deliberate echo of Mount Fuji in Japan) and blossoming trees create a peaceful atmosphere.

Gotthardt Kuehl | Impressionist painter

Gotthardt Kuehl (28 November 1850 - 9 January 1915) was a German painter and a representative of early German Impressionism. He gained wide international recognition during his lifetime.

His father, Simon Kühl, was the Sexton and organist at St. Lorenz Church. He studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (1867) and the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, (1870).

From 1878-1889, he lived in Paris. He also made study trips to Italy and the Netherlands.

In 1888, he married Henriette Simonson-Castelli (1860-1921), daughter of the portrait painter, David Simonson.

Wenzel Tornøe | Genre painter

Wenzel Ulrik Tornøe (1844-1907) was a Danish genre painter. Tornøe was the son of birch judge Jens Wenzel Tornøe (1792-1866) and Eleonore Jakobine - born Lacoppidan (1797-1872).

From 1861-65, he studied at the Art Academy and debuted in 1865 at Charlottenborg with Uffe the spages duel. 1865 came his A Poor Woman with her Child and Mignon and Harp Player, and since then he has been among the permanent exhibitors.

In 1871 he traveled to Rome, where he painted a quantity of genre pictures, for which he found many buyers so that he could extend his stay in the South over two years.

José Benlliure was born in Cañamelar, a seaside village in Valencia, on 30 September 1855.

The son of a modest painter and decorator and brother of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he studied from a very early age at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia and at the private studio of Francisco Domingo Marqués.

In 1872 he applied to the Diputación (provincial council) of Valencia for a travel grant.

Although his application was unsuccessful, he was awarded a sum of money that enabled him to make a study trip to Paris, where he came into contact with the art dealer Goupil. On returning to Valencia, he devoted himself to painting works for the National Exhibitions.

Lori Putnam, 1962 | Modern Impressionist painter

His mother was Polish and his father was a French soldier who was serving in the Crimean War.

Hans Herrmann | Genre painter

Johann Emil Rudolf Herrmann, known as Hans (8 March 1858, Berlin - 21 July 1942, Berlin) was a German landscape and genre painter. He specialized in scenes of the Netherlands.

He studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts with Otto Knille, Karl Gussow and Christian Wilberg.

From 1879-1882, he took classes in landscape painting from Eugen Dücker at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

Regular study trips took him to France, Italy, and Holland, where he attended the "Art Summer School" of the American-born painter, George Hitchcock.

Claude Monet at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris

The Musée d'Orsay is a museum in Paris, France, on the Left Bank of the Seine.

It is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898-1900.

The museum holds mainly French art dating from 1848-1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture and photography.

It houses the largest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces in the world, by painters including Berthe Morisot, Claude Monet - 86 paintings (another main collection of his paintings is in the Musée Marmottan Monet) including The Saint-Lazare Station, The Rue Montorgueil in Paris. Celebration of 30 June 1878, Wind Effect, Series of The Poplars, Rouen Cathedral. Harmony in Blue, Blue Water Lilies, Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, Haystacks, The Magpie, Women in the Garden - Édouard Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin and Van Gogh.

Many of these works were held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum's opening in 1986. It is one of the largest art museums in Europe.

Alice Neel | Abstract Expressionist painter

Alice Neel's (1900-1984) portraits hinge on trust. A figurative painter throughout the 20th century, she created work known for its deliberate distortion, bold outlines, expressive brushwork, and imaginative use of color.

Neel gained her subjects’ trust by inviting them into her home and telling them stories.

"She lulled you", recounted artist and friend Benny Andrews, whom she painted along with his wife, the photographer Mary Ellen Andrews, in 1972.

Her sitters knew that while her paintings may not always be flattering, she would paint what lay beneath the surface and she would not judge.

Max Slevogt | Impressionist painter

Max Slevogt (8 October 1868 - 20 September 1932) was a German Impressionist painter and illustrator, best known for his landscapes.

He was, together with Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann, one of the foremost representatives in Germany of the plein air style.

He was born in Landshut, Germany, in 1868. From 1885 to 1889 he studied at the Munich Academy, and his early paintings are dark in tone, exemplifying the prevailing style in Munich.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela | Art Nouveau / Symbolist painter

Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931) was a Finnish painter who is best known for his illustrations of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic.

His work is considered a very important aspect of the Finnish national identity.

He changed his name from Gallén to Gallen-Kallela in 1907.

Early life

Gallen-Kallela was born Axel Waldemar Gallén in Pori, Finland, in a Swedish-speaking family.

His father Peter Gallén worked as police chief and lawyer.

Gallen-Kallela was raised in Tyrvää.

At the age of 11 he was sent to Helsinki to study at a grammar school, because his father opposed his ambition to become a painter.

After his father's death in 1879, Gallen-Kallela attended drawing classes at the Finnish Art Society (1881-1884) and studied privately under Adolf von Becker.

Laurits Regner Tuxen was brought up in Copenhagen. As the son of a naval officer, he originally wanted to be a marine artist. When training at the Royal Danish Academy of fine Arts, he and Peder Severin Krøyer were considered to be the most talented students.

Tuxen first visited Skagen in 1870, and he returned several times during the 1870s. More than 20 years would pass before he returned in 1901.

During that time Tuxen trained as a painter in Paris together with Peder Severin Krøyer and he was one of the co-founders of the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler, which was established as an alternative to the academy.

Tuxen became a popular portrait painter and travelled a lot due to commissions from the royal courts of Europe.

Sir Cedric Morris | Post-Impressionist painter

Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris, 9th Baronet (11 December 1889 - 8 February 1982) was a British artist, art teacher and plantsman.

He was born in Swansea in South Wales, but worked mainly in East Anglia.

As an artist he is best known for his portraits, flower paintings and landscapes.

Painting style

Cedric Morris had a distinctive and often rather primitive post-Impressionist style, and painted portraits, landscapes and very decorative still lifes of flowers and birds.

In his analysis of Morris's paintings, Richard Morphet has suggested that the "unusual force of Cedric's paintings derives from the projection of the subject through a dynamic economy in combination with an acute sense of pictorial realism".

Dod Procter | Figurative painter

Dod Procter, born Doris Margaret Shaw, RA (1890-1972) was an English artist, and the wife of the artist Ernest Procter.

Her painting Morning was bought for the public by the Daily Mail in 1927.

Procter and her husband attended art schools in England and in Paris together, where they were both influenced by Impressionism and the Post-Impressionism movements.

Eva Bagge (Swedish, 1871-1964)

Eva Bagge (15 December 1871 - 6 November 1964) was a Swedish painter who studied first in Sweden and then made study trips to Rome and Paris.

Remembered in particular for her farm scenes and interiors, she did not reach her peak until 1941 when works based on her approach to late 19th-century Realism attracted attention at her solo exhibition in a Stockholm gallery.

Such was the interest that they were soon exhibited in Munich and Berlin. Several Swedish art museums, including Stockholm's Nationalmuseum, have works by Bagge in their collections.

Born on 15 December 1871 in Stockholm, Eva Bagge was the daughter of the printing press director Per Olof Bagge (1833-1872) and his wife Henrika Ottiliana née von Fieandt. She was the youngest of the family's three children and the cousin of artist Elisabeth Bagge.

William Henry Gore | Victorian Genre painter

William Henry Gore RI (1857-1942) was an British painter and watercolourist of the late Victorian period to the early Twentieth Century.

He is known for his rural landscapes of his native Berkshire and for his Genre paintings of children and animals.

Gore was in the tradition of late Victorian Romanticism and Naturalism that flourished in the period before the turn of the Twentieth Century but which quickly became unfashionable in the aftermath of the Great War and the social and political changes that followed.

Sir Peter Lely | Baroque painter

Sir Peter Lely (1618 -1680) was a painter of Dutch origin whose career was nearly all spent in England, where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court.

Lely was born Pieter van der Faes to Dutch parents in Soest in Westphalia, where his father was an officer serving in the armed forces of the Elector of Brandenburg.

Lely studied painting in Haarlem, where he may have been apprenticed to Pieter de Grebber.

He became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1637.

Heide Presse, 1958 | Romantic painter

Heide E. Presse was born in Heidelberg, Germany, and grew up in Louisiana.

Born with a natural artistic talent into a family with no other artistically inclined members, Presse had no formal art instruction until college. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in design from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas in 1980.

She worked as a commercial artist in Texas, but now calls Florida home with her husband and son.

In 1990, she decided to focus exclusively on painting, working in watercolor first, and more recently oil.

Her works have been recognized internationally and have been exhibited in many national exhibitions, including the exhibition of the American Painting Association.

Cristiano Banti | Macchiaioli painter

Cristiano Banti (4 January 1824 - 4 December 1904) was an Italian genre and landscape painter. He was a leading figure in the Macchiaioli movement of Tuscany.

Banti was born into a middle class family in Santa Croce sull'Arno. A scholarship enabled him to study at the Accademia di belle arti di Siena with Francesco Nenci.

At this time, he worked in the Neo-Classical style and produced what is perhaps his best-known work, Galileo Facing the Inquisition.

In 1854, he moved to Florence and became an habitué of the Caffè Michelangiolo, an important meeting place for local artists.

It was here that he had his introduction to the Macchiaioli movement.

Theodor von Hörmann | Impressionist / Genre painter

Theodor von Hörmann (1840-1895) is regarded as the first and only Austrian impressionist painter.

He was born on December 13, 1840 in Imst in Tyrol. He set out to pursue a career as a military officer and taught gymnastics, fencing and freehand drawing in various military schools.

In 1869 Hörmann’s first artistic attempts began with copies of color prints.

He soon turned to painting in oil. In 1872, already 33 years old and totally self-taught, Hörmann began art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Eduard von Lichtenfels.

Among his classmates were the younger students Hugo Darnaut and and Hugo Charlemont. Hörmann gained access to Emil Jakob Schindler, the most important Austrian landscape painter of the period.

Timoleon Lobrichon | Genre painter

Timoléon Marie Lobrichon (1831-1914) was a French genre scenes and portrait painter.

He received a formal artistic training with François Edouard Picot at the Paris Beaux-Arts Academy.

In 1859, he started exhibiting at the French Artists Salon and was awarded a first class medal in 1868. Lobrichon became one of the most sought after and praised painter for his portraits of children.

Eugène Alexis Girardet (1853-1907) was a French Orientalist painter of Swiss ancestry.

He came from a Swiss Huguenot family.

His father was the engraver Paul Girardet. His siblings, Jules, Léon, Paul Armand, Théodore and Julia Antonine (1851–1921), all became artists.

After learning engraving from his father, he studied at the École des Beaux-arts and in the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme, who encouraged him to visit North Africa in 1874.

Karl von Blaas | Academic Classicism painter

Karl von Blaas (28 April 1815 in Nauders - 19 March 1894 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter known for his portraits and religious compositions executed on canvas as well as in the form of frescoes.

Karl Von Blaas was born to a peasant family at Nauders in the Tyrol on 28 April 1815.

He is best known as a history painter and painter of portraits. His first art lessons were in Innsbruck, where he received an education as a writer.

But he was more interested in art, and so, like many painters at the time, he aspired to visit Italy to realize his goal of an in-depth art education. His uncle, a judge in Verona, recognized his talent and gave him financial support for study in Venice, which he undertook in 1832.

Theodor Josef Ethofer | Genre painter

Theodor Josef Ethofer (October 29, 1849 in Vienna - Leopoldstadt; † October 24, 1915 in Baden near Vienna) was an Austrian painter, known for Figure, genre and Austrian native costume painting.

Theodor Ethofer studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Carl Wurzinger.

He spent the period from 1872-1887 in Italy, visiting Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Sicily, Spain and Tunis, among other places. After a stay in Vienna, he settled in Salzburg in 1898, where he owned a studio in the Künstlerhaus.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir | The Wave / L'Onda, 1882

Each summer between 1879 and 1882 Pierre-Auguste Renoir traveled to Wargemont near Dieppe on the Normandy coast to visit his friend and patron Paul Bérard.

Renoir and Bérard, a banker and French diplomat, had met in 1878, when the artist was still struggling to find collectors for his Impressionist canvases.

Renoir and Bérard quickly formed a bond, leading to numerous commissioned portraits of the financier’s children and affording the artist a comfortable place to go for the summer well removed from the oppressive heat of Paris.

In the 1860s the seaside resorts in Normandy became the most popular summer retreats of the Parisian bourgeoisie. Here a young couple (likely the artist and his partner, Charlotte Berthier) are strolling past the luxurious Villa italiennein Trouville.

The red parasol adds an accent to the picture, in which fresh green tones are dominant. The depiction of the figures from behind allows viewers to put themselves in the role of the vacationers.

Every summer from 1880-1884, Gustave Caillebotte spent a number of weeks in Normandy, where he sailed in regattas and painted.

During this time he produced around fifty depictions of the area surrounding Trouville, a beach resort that had grown into a favorite holiday destination of the Parisian upper classes since the mid-nineteenth century.

Italian artist Sergio Cerchi was born in Florence, where he still lives and works.

He was educated at the Art Institute d'Arte di Porta Romana and studied at the Cherubim Conservatory courses.

From childhood, Sergio Cerci was "torn" between music and the visual arts: two indivisible passions cultivated with tenacity and determination, forcing him to simultaneously attend the workshops of local artists and play in various musical groups.

He began painting at the age of 15, trying different techniques and approaches before his personal style matured.

Isaac Snowman | Genre painter

Isaac Snowman (1873-1947) was an Anglo-Jewish artist who made Jewish cultural themes his subject.

Early life

He was educated at the City of London School. In 1890 he entered the Royal Academy School, where he gained a free medal, and afterward a scholarship in the Institution of British Artists.

He showed his interest in Jewish matters by his drawings A Difficult Passage in the Talmud and The Blessing of Sabbath Lights, as well as by his Early Morning Prayer in the Synagogue.

Raphaël Collin | Symbolist painter

Louis-Joseph-Raphaël Collin (17 June 1850 - 21 October 1916) was a French painter born and raised in Paris, where he became a prominent academic painter and a teacher.

He is principally known for the links he created between French and Japanese art, in both painting and ceramics.

Collin studied at the school of Saint-Louis, then went to Verdun where he was at school with Jules Bastien-Lepage; they became close friends.

Collin then went to Paris and studied in the atelier of Bouguereau and then joined Lepage at Alexandre Cabanel's atelier where they both worked alongside Fernand Cormon, Aimé Morot and Benjamin Constant.

Vincent van Gogh | Houses at Auvers, 1890

"Houses at Auvers" is an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh, located at the Toledo Museum of Art.

It was created towards the end of May or beginning of June 1890, shortly after he had moved to Auvers-sur-Oise, a small town northwest of Paris, France.

His move was prompted by his dissatisfaction with the boredom and monotony of asylum life at Saint-Rémy, as well as by his emergence as an artist of some renown following Albert Aurier's celebrated January 1890, Mercure de France, review of his work.

In his final two months at Saint-Rémy, van Gogh painted from memory a number of canvases he called, "reminisces of the North", harking back to his Dutch roots.

The influence of this return to the North continued at Auvers, notably in The Church at Auvers.

Claude Monet at the Museum Barberini

The Hasso Plattner Collection - Museum Barberini - contains more than 100 works by Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters, including 34 paintings by Claude Monet.

With over one hundred paintings, the Museum Barberini presented from 22 February - 19 July 2020, the largest retrospective ever to be devoted to the Impressionist painter Claude Monet in a German museum.

The exhibition drew primarily on the Hasso Plattner Collection and the Impressionist holdings of the Denver Art Museum, augmented by numerous loans from museums and private collections in many different countries, including the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

Alexander Mark Rossi | Genre painter

Alexander Mark Rossi (1840-1916) was a successful British artist, specializing in genre works who flourished in the late 19th century.

He was born on the Greek Island of Corfu, the son of Dr Mark Rossi, an Italian who was one of the three judges presiding over the Ionian Islands during the time of British rule. On a visit to Preston, England in 1866, Rossi met and later married Jane Gillow.

He remained in the United Kingdom thereafter. In the 1870s he moved to London.

Auguste-Émile Pinchart | Genre painter

Auguste-Émile Pinchart, or Émile-Auguste Pinchart (10 August 1842, Cambrai - November 1920, Tunis) was a French painter and designer who is best remembered for his Orientalist scenes.

He began as a student in the workshops of Jean-Léon Gérôme, then signed a contract with the art dealers, Goupil and Cie, to produce drawings for reproduction as prints, creating genre scenes of everyday life that proved to be quite popular.

His first exhibit at the Salon came in 1864.

During the Paris Commune, he became friends with the writer, Émile Bergerat, who recalls in his memoirs that Pinchart occasionally worked as a butcher, to help his fellow artists survive the siege.

Annie Feray Mutrie (British, 1826-1893) - Cactus | Bonhams

Annie Feray Mutrie was the younger sister of Martha Darley Mutrie. Born in Manchester, both girls studied at the Manchester School of Design under George Wallis. Both artists specialised in still life painting, regularly exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1851-1882.

The naturalistic style of their work was admired by John Ruskin, who in praise of Annie Feray wrote: "All these flower paintings are remarkable for very lovely, pure, and yet unobtrusive colour- perfectly tender and yet luscious, and a richness of petal texture that seems absolutely scented.

Spanish art has been an important contributor to Western art and Spain has produced many famous and influential artists including Velázquez, Goya and Picasso.

Spanish art was particularly influenced by Italy and France during the Baroque and Neoclassical periods, but Spanish art has often had very distinctive characteristics, partly explained by the Moorish heritage in Spain (especially in Andalusia), and through the political and cultural climate in Spain during the Counter-Reformation and the subsequent eclipse of Spanish power under the Bourbon dynasty.

Gustaf Theodor Wallén | Genre painter

A painter of landscape, coastal scenes, portraits and sculpture, Gustaf Theodor Wallén was an artist of considerable renown achieving significant success in Paris and in Sweden.

He was born in Stockholm 14th December 1860.

Wallén studied at the Academy of Art under George von Rosen (1843-1923), a professor at the Academy from 1860-1908.

In 1887 Wallén won a travel award which enabled him to study in Paris at the Académie Colarossi and, under William Bouguereau at the Academie Julian.

Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius (Swedish, 1864-1939)

Gerda Roosval-Kallstenius (10 February 1864, Kalmar - 21 August 1939, Västervik) was a Swedish painter who specialized in landscapes and scenes with figures.

She was the daughter of businessman John Roosval and Johanna Kramer. Her father's family produced several notables in the world of the creative arts, including her maternal uncles, the art historian Johnny Roosval and early filmmaker Albin Roosval.

Roosval-Kallstenius grew up in Kalmar and was sent to Montreux after completing her girls' school, where she deepened her French skills and gained artistic inspiration.

After returning to Kalmar in June 1881, she was taught drawing and painting by Christine Sundberg, one of the first women to study at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.

Anna Bilińska (1854-1893)

Anna Bilińska, also known as Anna Bilińska-Bohdanowicz, (8 December 1854 - 18 April 1893) was a Polish painter, known for her portraits. A representative of realism, she spent much of her artistic life in Paris.

Life

She was born in Zlatopol (formerly a frontier town of the Russian Empire, today a part of Novomyrhorod) as Anna Bilińska, and spent her childhood there with her father who was a Polish physician. Of her background, she joked that she "ha[d] a Cossack's temperament but a Polish heart" (Polish: ma temperament kozaczy, ale serce polskie).

The family then moved to Central Russia, where Anna’s first art teachers were Ignacy Jasiński and Michał Elwiro Andriolli, both deported by the Tsarist government to Vyatka for their part in the January Uprising of 1863–1864. Later she studied music and art in Warsaw, where in 1877 she became a student of the painter Wojciech Gerson.

Marie Lucas Robiquet | Orientalist painter

Marie Elisabeth Aimée Lucas-Robiquet (17 October 1858 – 21 December 1959) was a French Orientalist artist who worked within the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français.

Lucas-Robiquet was recognized for her paintings of African and Algerian subjects.

The 1897 edition of Parisian Illustrated Review cites her outdoor studies for a "wise tendency toward reasonable impressionism" by "an artist of the highest order".

Marie Lucas-Robiquet was a rare example of a female artist, living and working in North Africa, at a time when women were rarely admitted to art academies, and were not encouraged to travel without a chaperone. Her paintings reveal some of the locations where she travelled including Algeria.

Adolphe Henri Laissement | Genre painter

Henri Laissement was was a French portrait and genre painter.

In 1872, at the age of 18 he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts studying under Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) who greatly influenced his drawing technique.

He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1879 and continued to exhibit there regularly until 1912.

He received a number of accolades over the years including honourable mention awards in 1882 and 1889, a third class medal in 1898, a bronze medal in 1900, and a second class medal in 1905.
